Just wondering if anyone has hooked up a 522 for their boat. I'm planning on putting one in the front of my boat. It seems to be pretty simple, but I know they recommend installing a on/off switch for the gps antenna. Not sure if I would be better off hooking it to my starting battery or on the 12 volt side of my trolling batteries. Hoping to get a little feedback that may save me some headaches this winter. Thanks

hook it to your starting battery, no need for the on/off switch.
don't hook it to anything related to your trolling motor or batteries as that is a main reason for interference...
if you have a good starting battery, battery life will not be an issue. I run 4 units off my starting battery and have never had a problem starting the outboard.

I would install the on-off switch. I had trouble with mine in the past a few times if I didn't use the boat often. The gps will draw from the battery all the time if you dont use the switch

wouldnt just unplugging it from the back of the unit be easier and cheaper?

that's what i do...just unplug my units from the back each time i put the boat on the trailer. i had issues with the 4xx series with a slow power drain, obviously haven't had any of the same with my 5xx series last year since i was unplugging them.

Unpluggin it would be cheaper but when has boats ever been cheap? It's not as easy as you make it sound to keep unplugging it from the back if you have it mounted close to the side of the boat, I know unplugging mine is a royal PITA.

Is this your main Combo on the dash? If so, I would recommend connecting directly to the battery, and use a power switch. Use good connectors, make sure to have good physical connections, and don't forget the fuse at the battery end.

Here's a picture of the recommended connection.
