Anyone experimented or have information/recommendations to share on what tint color works best on sunglasses with respect to seeing into the water? I have been using dark grey/black tints in favor of more sun protection for my eyes, but I don't think I can see into the lake adequately. I am wondering if a brown tint or green tint or something would be better. I'll give up a little eye protection if I could see into the water better. The lake I fish most is primarily a dark stain, sometimes green when there's a bloom, but usually just a dark stain...Vermilion. Thanks.

personally I think "amber" or "vermillion" lenses work best for sunny conditions...on cloudy / low light times I feel a much lighter colored lense like Costa's "sunrise" lense works best...during low light/cloudy conditions I think you want a lense that doesn't darken the situation...in fact, I have been thinking of trying a pair of "shooting glasses" that are barely tinted at all but polarized for low light times...grey are not good for those situations imo.

I am of the same opinion. I believe that Vermillion is the best all around color. However, I, too, will use the Sunrise color early and late in the day. Love my Costa del Mar Pescadors.

I love my costa hammerheads with the green (amber tint) lenses for all applications/light levels, but WARNING!!!!:

they recently were hanging on my shirt and fell off and, you guessed it - one of the lenses cracked. Replacement cost: $125.00 OR they offered to send me a new pair for $150.00 (which i opted for).

Kind of wishing i went with the plastic (480?) lenses originally, as I'm sure I'll break these again eventually.

Other than that - they are SWEET.

By "vermillion" I assume you mean a redish tint?

I use the green mirror with the amber lense for bright days but I do need to get a sunrise yellow pair for lower light. I once bought an untinted pair of polarized glasses they did absolutely nothing. My glassea are costa del mar fathoms, love them and you can buy them much cpeaper on ebay.

I use an amber/yellow for low light, most of the time, and a Copper/light brown for 90% of my fishing. I also use a grey lens for high sunlight.
I use Oakley's and Action Optics. The AO's are a photo-chromic glass lens, which is something that is unique. They are light sensitive, and adjust the tint due how heavy light you are in. The coper lens is superior to any I've tried. The only time I really use a Dark grey mirrored lens is blue water fishing for Marlin and sails.

I think good lenses are an often overlooked piece of gear. The Costa Del Mar sunrise lense is great at low light..but I have done quite a bit of research and looking into other lenses and have found a lense I'm going to try this year at low light..As Whooligan states above Action Optics by Smith makes some photochromic lenses which are polarized, and will adjust to the light levels...sort of like the geeky glasses I had in 4th grade...but the coppers as he states above will only allow up to 28% light thru. they make a polarchromic yellow/amber lense that allows up to 31% light thru will be a touch better for low light, glass lenses, less scratch resistant than plastic. Personally I carry 2 pairs of shades at all times...the Costa's in sunrise which are for low light, sunrise/sunset times and their Amber lenses for all other times.
let ya know how they are...

Bn, You'll really like the amber for low ligh if you are wearing the Costa's now. The tint is JUST the right shade, so that it is light gathering when you need it, and not harsh at all when its getting to the point you could put on darker lenses. I've fished them for several years now, and would recommend them over any other GLASS lens.

I'm going to try a pair with the "polarchromic yellow" from Smith...which the also call amber for some reason...
I think they will be awesome for low light...The Costa's are great but getting a bit scratched up over the last few years

I own 2 pair of Costa Del Mars (Great Optical Plan at work-really) - First pair I bought were the Fathoms with Blue Mirrored Lenses... great for seeing in the water - ONLY if it was high skies in the middle of July! These glasses seriously block out the glare and are actually the glasses I prefer to wear out on the ice in the winter.... however, in low light conditions they were too dark and I was unable to even use them.

My 2nd pair that I bought just last year are Costa Del Mar Hammerheads with AMBER lenses...I wouldn't trade these for a pot of gold - well maybe a big pot - but anyway... the polarized lenses pull in just enough light that they're beneficial to wear just as early in the morning as you choose to put them on - and Vice Versa in the evening. The thick frames block out plenty of the "bad stuff" and let in the "good stuff" in the middle of the day .... without a doubt - these are my favorite glasses of all time... even better then my Oakley FrogSkins back in Junior High (Circa 1987)

I have owned Polarized: Strens (back in the cheapo college days), Ray Bans, even sat on a very expensive pair of Maui Jims the day I caught my first 50" - my opinion is that Costas are the Cadillac of Fishing Glasses... and given the choice... I'm going with Amber Lenses from here on out.

I should write advertisements for this company eh? I'd bet the "kickbacks" would be awesome.
