I called my dad after I saw this post.
My grandfather came from Poland, and he and my father and my uncles used to make trips "Up North" often. I asked him how to say muskie in Polish and he said that because there were no muskies in Poland, there was no word for muskie. They simply called them muskies.

Southwestern Native American, my mother called them--##@#%^%$!!!

I think the problem is the unique geographical distribution...just the English sticks.[]

I understand Russia has a fish similar in some of the huge inland waters there, was rumored to be very large, and nicknamed the 'Ruskie Muskie'.

sworrall:

I believe the fish you refer to is the Amur Pike (Esox reicherti). While it was touted as a "Russian Muskie" when it was introduced into Pennsylvania waters many years ago, it is more closely related the the (Northern) Pike (Esox lucius). However, it "looks" more like a muskie, with brown spots on a light background vs. white spots on a dark background for pike.

Largest specimen caught in Pa. was 24# 3oz. and is the NFWFHF listed world record, although I understand they regularly take them up to 16kg. (around 35 pounds) in their native waters.

They derive their name from the Amur River, which runs between Russia and Mongolia.
