Location: Chicago western burbs | We are trying to build a top raider. We can put it on the computerized lathe and it comes out beautifully, however, the issue we are having is drilling a hole completly through the bait. The bit on the drill press, even when worked really slow, does not give us a centered cut. We are drilling it before we put it on the lathe. Do we need to cut it in half first, drill it, than glue it back together? How are you guys doing it?

Location: Hastings, mn, 55033 | what type of wood are you using? I think you are better off going with a higher speed on your drill press than a slower speed. The bit likes to follow the grain sometimes instead of drilling through it, happens much less with a higher speed.
Also, I find it works best to drill a pilot hole in the center on each end(maybe 2" deep) then use a longer bit to drill though whats left.
Or some guys drill the center hole using the lathe. |

| Start with a bigger piece of wood. Ive done this without computers, a $100 lathe, and a $35 drill with a 12" drill bit. It might not be centered but you can turn out your mistakes. Just clamp the wood down good, get down to the level wood and start drilling maybe a half inch at a time keep pulling the bit out and pushing it back in. You'll know if its working by actually looking and feeling rather than letting a machine do it for you. Good luck. |
