Location: chicago | I just fished reading 2 books and both books recommend down sizing the hooks that come on the lures. What do you guys think? They say that the smaller hooks go into the little bit of soft tissue in there mouth a lot easier then the bigger ones!!! |

| The complete opposite.
I put bigger hooks on my of my baits. |

| happy holidays to all...what larger size hooks would you put say on a standard topraider / 9" bulldog / 7" phantom / other examples...?...i've been going up usually one size with good results...how big is too big though...?...any preference to wide gap or o'shaughnessy styles...?...i'm using a little of each and really can't see much of a difference between them thus far...has anyone noticed a measurable difference between hook style effectiveness..?
thanks,
stan

Location: Yahara River Chain | On a standard topraider, I place a Mustad #3551 7/0 on the back & front. With this you can also leave the belly hook off and throw it in real heavy weedy areas and it won't foul up the bait much and maybe get a few outta that slop.
As for how big it too big? I really depends on the lure. Some bucktails you can upgrade to a 6/0 or 7/0 and it will not have an effect. On cranks, topwaters, and jerks it a different story. Put them on, and throw them. If they ruin the action you went too big. Sometimes only 1 size larger is all you can get away with. |

Location: Yahara River Chain | Yup it is. They sharpen up real nice and hold a point pretty well. But there are other hooks that are good as well, it just I grew up using these and they never fail me. |
