Location: Maple Grove, Minnesota | I was wondering what the best wire former there was on the market. My father is retiring this winter and loves muskie fishing. He has talked about making his own leaders and bucktails for some time now. I figure what would be a better Christmas present then to give him something to tinker with over the long winter. I also wouldn’t mind getting some nice free leaders out of the deal. Does anyone know a good place to find a good one in the Twin Cities? Any help would be much appreciated.

Location: Mt. Zion, IL | if he would like to make large bucktails, i would use the hagen. the wire does not run through a sleve so bait size is less limited. in my opinion it is just easier to use.

| I personally use the Hagen and I love it. It’s easy to use and you can do a lot with it. You can get different die sets based on the size wire that you are going to be using. The money you save on leaders will easily pay for this piece of equipment.

Location: Bemidji, MN | Get the hagen's I had the bogg's and it is WAY easir to make larger baits with the Hagen's. I got mine from cabela's, which at the time was the cheapest by quite a bit. Make sure you get the big head for musky baits right away though. |

I asked the same question to Dick Moore a few weeks ago and he said that he didn't know of anything. The other thing you have to consider is that many components are not built to accept the heavy gauge wire. I have one of his wire benders and it is well worth the money. It is by far the heaviest duty and most well built former on the market but it is expensive. |

| Nipex< rounded long nose pliers and you can find them at thorn bros. It takes some time getting used to it but once you figure ot out its simple. .061 wire heats up more than .051 wire but other than that Nipex is solid, great product for $25!! |

| I have the boggs, hagen's and both have the .051 capabilities. Other than making some bends on the spinnerbait wires, I don't use either one. Couple pair of round nose pliers and a little practice, they make the nicest tight wraps. When making leaders I use the 174# wire and the round nose pliers, perfect wraps with alittle patience. That .061 wire well I haven't figured that out yet, that's like bending re-bar. Oh! I have found out that making the tag ends on the .051 wire longer, gives me more leverage for wraping (easier on the fingers too). |

| Ditto on the Knipex round nose when looping 0.062" wire. Takes a few tries to get the technique down but after making a few you can make some nice loops. Also agree with what upnorth says with regard to leaving some extra on the tag end to give you leverage, that is key to making a nice tight wrap on the bottom of the loop. | Using a vice grip makes a HUGE difference, as does leaving a long tag end. Once you get the loop started, use the vice grip to hold the wire and start bending. I wrap mine using just my fingers, but wouldn't be able to do it without the vice grip.
Great tutorial, Pete. Looks like a needle nose vice grip and round nosed Knipex are in store for the stocking!! Your loops are great. Mine come out lopsided and I've been a bit disgruntled about that. Thanks for sharing!
