Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Hey everyone, I hope all had a good fishing season and have a great and safe holiday season. Well I got into some different baits That I have been playing around with. I am in the Cleveland area and the Night walleye bite is world class here believe it of not. I have always used the standard Husky jerks and rapala's for the night bite. I got to thinking I should try some homemade baits on them. I had to scale down a bit but has been fun. Most of the baits are in the 6" to the 8" range. I really excited to try them out in the spring for some musky's. Here are a couple of pics Attachments ---------------- DSC05290gaggle.jpg (35KB - 131 downloads) DSC05362blackprismelt1.jpg (29KB - 142 downloads) DSC05324firstwalleye.jpg (36KB - 141 downloads) DSC05295blackhead.jpg (25KB - 144 downloads)

Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | I tried some jointed ones and had very very good success on them. The orange tiger jointed one took 2 fish the one night. One was 11lbs 3 oz and the other was 10 lbs 2 oz. My friend Andy is having the big one mounted. I am the fella on the left. Both fish came 15 minutes apart!!!!!!!!! Crazy!!!!!!!! The white jointed one with the yellow head took a 10lb 3oz one that was my personal best on one of my walleye baits. It has been really fun! Here are some more pics. I hope I can get some bigger teeth marks from musky's in the spring! Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | This what we had the one night with three of us on the boat. I think that 7 of the fish came on the baits. It was alot of fun. Oh one other thing. I had some fun with a hook in the shoulder! We pushed it through and snipped it off! Pucker factor was high!!!!!!! Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Thanks guys it was alot of fun to do something on a smaller scale. It is really neat for the basement guys to experiment and learn as we go. Last year before really getting into building the baits I had spent alot of time thinking what might work better than something on a shelf at the sporting goods store. Mostly for a specific situation or time of year. I started to realize that the big walleyes were very high in the water column. Like the top 3 feet. The second thing was a lure that wobbled with good action at a very low speed. Like less than 1.8 mph. Since I am learning and starting to see how much experience the long time lure builders must have. I have been learning thru trial and error. I found out that the lures with a bent back seem to fit the purpose with the slow wobble more than the straight backs. Amazing the suttle difference with the lips also. But most of all was the colors. The night bite it seems that the brighter colors worked the best. Yellows, whites and oranges. I know I can catch some musky's on them in the spring. I can't wait! The night bite. The night bite is very special thing that happens starting in October. I know of only a couple of places that this happens. I think they do it in the Greenbay area and out west in the Columbia river I think. Basically the whole shoreline of Lake Erie turns into a shorline type of bite. People can cast from the shore and do well but a small group of guys troll at night just outside the casters. I have been fishing downtown Cleveland. Yes right in front of the Rock-n-roll hall of fame and the Cleveland Browns stadium. This is only a couple hundred yards away. The big females come to feed heavy on the smelt and shad that come into the shore line. They are getting to feed the egg developement. The bite will continue well into ice-up. I have noticed that they are spitting up 4" shads in the livewell. I made a bait I can't wait to try when the weather settles down. I did a couple others to try also. I can't wait. There are guys that do run Charters at night. If anyone needs info just pm me and I can get some infor for you. I don't guide. I thought about it but it is one of my favorite things to do and it would take the fun out of it for me! LOL Steve. I didn't get a chance to go to any of the weigh ins on the FLW this year. I wish I did. They just annouced that they are not going to have the Championship here because of conflicts with the NFL and Major league baseball!!!!!!!! Bummer. They will do some other events they said earlier in the year. Two of my friends got to drive the camera boats for the events. I was fishing on Sunday 20 miles east of Cleveland and they came screaming by on their way to the fishing spots. Full throttle!!!!!!!! I am suprised they don't get whiplash. LOL It has been a great fall. We have boated 7 walleyes on my boat the last 3 weeks over 10 lbs. Two were over 11 pounds. I got this one last week that went 11.995 lbs in a little tournament we are fishing. The fish was only 29" long! Nuts!!!!!!!!! Not bragging or anything just sharing! The weather went into the dumpster. 12 to 15 foot waves right now! I hope we can get a couple more trips in before ice up. Again, having fun making baits and experimenting around is what it is all about. Even more fun sharing it with my luremaking family! Jed I like that one also. I haven't got one on it yet but when the water gets alittle colder I think it will work great. I think I have a closer pic of it. Grunt that was some fun pushing the hook the rest of the 3/8" thru!!!!!!!!!! I hurt more pulling it back out with the snipped mushroomed end on it!!! Posts: 199 Location: Sandusky, OH | Okay, tigger, I've been watching the stuff you've been making from here and on OGF, and I have to say your work is outstanding. I absolutely love the little shad bait and the 'drop-belly' minnows from the last set of pictures; you should try a few with deeper diving bills for the spring trolling off the reefs and islands. If you could make a bait that has the action of a deep husky jerk with better hooking percentage you'd be worshipped by cold water trollers everywhere. Keep up the outstanding work here and on the other forum you post on (you and vince do a great job over there inspiring the masses). Thanks. Eric

Posts: 199 Location: Sandusky, OH | snoekfisker, There are an estimated 30 million age 2+ walleye in Lake Erie, thus catch and release for walleye is not as common/encouraged as for other species, like musky and your zander. Plus, they taste great, so not many are inclined to put fish back, although anglers keeping smaller fish and releasing large ones is becoming more common. Posts: 2024 | Tigger, The more I look at your baits the more spectacular they look. How are they weighted? Does the metal lip up front add weight and if so do they then suspend? BTW, you have a PM if you haven't checked.

Posts: 4266 | Tigger, you never cease to amaze me. All of those lures are incredible. Walleyefirst boys would eat those up. How big/heavy are those shad type lures? I'd love casting those in the summer and fall on The Mississippi River. You are one talented individual. Beav

I would love to try some of those walleye baits in the allegheny river and at Erie at nite. (PA Erie) If you ever have some to sell, please email me/ Continued success in your lure making venture!! Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Hey guys, We tried last night again. Breaking down fast here. Skim ice is forming by the ramps!!!!!The water temp hit 38.5. Those fish seem to slide back out of range into the deeper water. It seems like it ends as fast as it starts. The reverse happens after post spawn in the spring. It will be a long winter! LOL Snoekfisker. As bluegill stated. alot of walleye in the lake. Ironically I hardly ever keep any fish. It drives people a little batty. You spend all that gas money and time and don't keep any. There is only my wife and daughter. How much fish can you eat! LOL In the fall I like to take people that don't get to fish for walleyes much out. A real treat for them. I will let them take my limit home also if they are looking for fish. I tell them to split the fillets down on those big ones so they eat better. They are having a 3 week walleye tounament that ends tonight. The biggest straight up fish. You can upgrade your fish as it goes on. It has to be weighed on one of five certified scale locations. The baits. Thanks for the kind words guys. I really really enjoy tinkering around with them. I am amazed the things you find out with the weighting ,body shapes, and lip designs of the baits. In the past you catch a fish take the hook out and throw it in the cooler. After making the baits I have been paying a little more attention to the details. For instance....... With the walleyes........ The smaller fish like the 3 to 6 poounders will head shot the bait. In a "t" bone manner. almost every one of those fish is hooked on the front hook. Sometimes the back hook will spin around a catch them in the side at time. They will hit like a freight train!!!!!!! You think a salmon just took the bait. The big ones over 9 pounds seem to come up behind the bait and take it on the back hook. The bait is usually in the in their mouth a bit. This got me thinking about the baits having attracting action but not too crazy for the big ones to chase. They seem to be more lazy in their approach. This was then linked to speed. At a little faster speed the smaller ones/aggressive ones kept taking the baits. When the speed super slow to 1.3 to 1.8 bigger ones got involved. Arched backs verses straight. The arched back baits got the actions closer to the what I was looking for a slow speeds. The straight backs worked better at 2.2 to 2.5. Broken backs.. The opened a new door in the slow speed trolling with their willingness to give good action and the impression of a bigger bait. It help also with the extra sound it makes with the clicking of the hardware. Hook placement. With the walleye baits. I was worried about not having a center hook in the middle of the bait. The 6" plus ones. It impeaded the action a bit with the middle hook. The action it moocho better without it. It didn't seem to effect the hook-ups with out it. I am still so new to the baitmaking thing. So much to learn. I am no better than any of the others. All baitmaking is great in my book. It is hard to teeder on the edge of having fun and bussiness. The walleye baits are on the fun side!!!!!!!! LOL Esox 50 ........... Most of the baits are on the very bouyant side. Some are slow sinkers but not by design. A couple are neutral bouyant. I found the cherry bodied ones are the sinkers and the poplar ones are the corky type. The zone is so tight on the active feeding area. The baits fun the top 6 feet range with the adjustment coming off the leader lengths. The inline boards will have leads as short as 5 feet back and not more than 40 on the others. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Speaking of Zander. A good friend of mine from Sweden sent me these pics of big Zander caught the last week over there. I think 18 pounds and 24 pounds. I guess they catch them from shore this time of year. Man they sure like a walleye. Speaking of Swedish baits. He sent me a "Zico" bait. They are not made anymore. I caught a nice 10.7 pounder it last week on it. I broke the lip off it when it smacked into the side of the boat in big waves!!!!!!!!!!! Posts: 199 Location: Sandusky, OH | Tigger, what size are the trebles you are using? They look a little disproportionate to me, but if you aren't having problems keeping big fish pinned, it must be all in my head. Eric I wonder what those VMC shurset hooks would look like on the front.
