Posts: 32935 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | All the lakes near my home are sheeted over solid, and temps look to keep it that way. It's for sure over now up here until I can get out on the ice.

Posts: 376 Location: Lake Vermilion Tower, MN | The Big V also has ice on most of the small bays. Big Bay was still open as of this morning. Night time lows in the teens all this week may also do the job on the main lake very soon. There are still some ramps open on some of the larger areas of the lake. If Big bay stays open there are still a few good fishing days left. Highs around the mid 30's are still in the forecast for the weekend. It could be the last chance for any of you hard core trollers to get out. "Ace"

Posts: 1764 Location: Ogden, Ut | Pineview was still 43F today. Unfortunately, the air temp was about 30 and the wind was blowing about 15mph...not a good combination if you have to take a kid fishing. He (and therefore we) lasted about 2 hours though. I'm pretty sure I still have a couple of weeks left. S.

Location: The Yahara Chain | We used my Frabill as an icebreaker late this AM to get out on a southern Wisconsin lake. Water temps were 40. We managed one fish for our ice breaking efforts.

Posts: 581 | Anyone know about the bigger lakes in Vilas/Oneida? Trout? Presque Isle? The Twins? If still open, how long will they last? I was hoping for one more shot next week...

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | small boat, break some ice and you could fish a few of the bigger lakes today ... by tomorrow morning i would expect most everything to be pretty tight ... next week would be way out based on the forecast i've seen. the lakes were just waiting for a couple nights like the past 3 and temps. support ice build throughout the next 10 days with only one high above freezing ... which really doesn't matter ... the long cold nights have control right now. we'll be ice fishing next weekend

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | i don't want my post to send anyone away this weekend ... my response was toward the question which was stated for next weekend. the bigger water is open now ... there has been snowfall yesterday and today which will make any and all landings extremely slippery and all access points will have some ice to deal with regardless of the body of water. so, if you've been there and done that you could fish this weekend i'm sure ... but, it you aren't prepared to handle what faces you at the landings ... you won't. good luck to those able to get out the last hours of the season ... to the rest ... i'm ready for ice. by next weekend we'll be hunting grouse in snow-covered woods, ice fishing, playing outdoor hockey and downhill skiing ... snowmobiling soon enough ... winter isn't the end ... it's just the beginning!!! if any of you are ice fishermen ... make sure to shoot a pm if you are headed north ... happy days! Posts: 581 | Thanks for the updates. I was hoping for one last hurrah on one of the bigger lakes (Trout, PI) either Tues or Wed next week. Doesn't sound likely at this point with the forecasted lows in teens and near single digits. But anyone with confirmed open water sightings would be greatly appreciated over the next few days.....hate to give up hope!

Posts: 457 | Another month, maybe, before I have to hang up for the soft water fishing. In all likelihood, I'll be able to fish about two of those thirty days...

Posts: 376 Location: Lake Vermilion Tower, MN | Vermilion is iced up from shore to shore. 4 below zero tonight for a low temp. That should take care of any open water that remains. See ya next summer!! "Ace"

Posts: 1106 Location: Muskegon Michigan | Over here in Michigan we still have all open water. The Walleye bite is on at night and we are looking to troll Muskies this weekend. Last year I got a 30 pounder on December 15th. The best part, NO water skis or wave runners ha ha ha . Kingfisher

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | it's going to be an unsafe year in some areas based on the condiitons ... on big lakes you literally have the lake freezing over one night and getting the snow the following night ... you can already see the seepage of the water from the weight ... it's going to suck for awhile in some places. most reports in my immediate area were of 4 or 5" of ice under the snow on the best of ice ... in some bays and smaller lakes that froze the week earlier. know where you are going and find out the details before you venture out somewhere. the conditions will be vasly different year to year.
