I was thinking of getting the new 8'6" ST Croix for Mag Dawgs. Has anyone here tried these yet and what did you think? Also, what would be a good reel to use with it?

Posts: 401 | I built a couple of them last year and those folks have expressed interest in getting another one. St Croix really did a nice job designing that blank. I just wish it was a different color so us custom guys could do something with it. Hard to come up with thread color options on a cobalt blue blank. Keith

Posts: 90 | Keith made one for me last year and I absolutely love it. Works great for a number of different applications, including Mag Dawgs. I have a 400 TE on mine, and am very happy with it. Something you may want to consider is oversize cork. Talk to Keith, he is a wealth of information. Edited by pluggr 11/16/2007 3:44 PM

Posts: 38 Location: Port Washington, WI | I have the 7'6" model that I have used mostly for mag dawgs and other jerkbaits. I have been very happy with it. I have been using an older Shimano Calcutta 400 and it has held up pretty well. Probably won't make any changes there for next year.

I would recommend going to something more stout like the Avid heavy blank for dawgs.

Posts: 238 | Guest - 11/19/2007 3:03 PM The legend tournament8'6" known as the big dawg is an x-tra heavy blank and much stouter than any avid in the st.croix stable. All you cant get in the avid lineup is heavy nothing more.As of now avids are discontinued but the three heavyest blanks st.croix still makes are a premier x-heavy,legend in 7-6 and 8-6 extra heavy and premier xxxh.I would recommend going to something more stout like the Avid heavy blank for dawgs.

Posts: 401 | The tournament has the new ART and IPC built into their sticks. http://www.stcroixrods.com/rods/default.asp?section=spin The taper is every 1/2 I believe I was told which puts the stress of the bend through the entire blank not just three points. This blank is really over designed which is a benefit to us. St Croix did some nice work on this blank. The bass mega swimbait, I think is one of the best musky rods they make. The 8-6 XH musky does not have enough tip action for my likings but that is just my preference. I know several musky folks that love the 8-6 XH. Edited by Professional Edge 11/19/2007 5:24 PM

Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | I run 2 rods off that 8-6 swimbait rod and love them! Effortless casting compared to most rods. Just get your wallet ready cuz their expensive...
