If I was to add a trolling plate to my 2002 2 stroke 90 hp Mercury to troll at slower speeds what would you suggest?

Throwing a bucket or two out the back on a piece of rope instead.

Just looking to see if I should steer away from any certain models or if there is a model out there that is really easy to install and still effective

Trolling plates work well just don't forget to release it before going on plane.

My brother had to drill a 3" hole in the middle of the plate for the motor exhaust to get out to keep his motor from overheating.

I would also suggest getting a drift sock rather than going with a trolling plate. The trolling plates work well enough, but if you have to go in reverse, you have no power, nor will it steer well. With a drift sock, you can slow yourself down whether you are forward trolling or back trolling, and if you need to make a quick correction by changing gear the boat will respond quickly.
