I added, and voted only for a spare tire.

I'm never that concerned about anything on the trailer but having a spare. If bulbs go out, they can wait. I don't worry about wheel bearings. I keep them in tip top condition. So I don't need the grease, rags, hub/bearing kit, wrenches, cotter pins, etc. I use my truck jack.

That is why I would think of this as a small tool box type of thing.

I'm surprised that you wouldn't carry an extra bearing on a long trip, though... But then again, not everyone does a long trip either. I make one big trip (1000 miles one way with 40 of that on poorly paved dirt roads) and have seen plenty of bearings go down from losing the hub cup or bearing buddy... Not fun at all..

I keep a bottle of lube for the liqui-lube hubs, along with a full set of all the parts for them in the baitwell area of my magnum. I figure since the boat is always with the trailer when on the road what better place to keep them. And if a buddy pulls my boat the parts are still with me and not in my truck. I also have extra trailer bulbs. While I do have extra parts pieces of trailer lights I keep those in the garage at home.

I understand the small toolbox thing. I have probably averaged 5-6000 miles per year on boat trailers for the past nearly 30 years. Ususally an annual trip to Canada. The only time I had a bearing problem(1983) was when I borrowed a boat, and the guy said he had just filled his bearing buddys. I made it as far as Marinette from Fond du Lac, on the way to Lake Nippissing. The races had welded themselves to the axle on both sides. A spare bearing would not have helped. Proper maintainance is the best spare. Losing a bearing buddy or cap should not spell doom, if there is not water in the hub.

Bearing buddys are not all they are cracked up to be. They serve a specific function, and that function is only to keep positive pressure on the seal, so that water doesn't get sucked in when the hot hub is immersed in water. That is it. They definately aren't meant to add lube and pack your bearings.

I couldn't agree with you more on that!! I have the buddies, but those hubs get pulled apart and repacked each fall. ( think were in the same viewpoint here too..preventative maintenance usually means no problems. I probably could get by without carrying the extra bearings, but murphy seems to catch me if I don't... hate his laws...

Had an experience with a wheel bearing once. now I keep a box of wheel bearing parts and tools to change bearings, down to bearing packer and grease gun and latex disposable gloves to work on bearings.
