I have a 1985ish 40 horse Johnson that starts with no problem but will only run about 1/3 speed unless I push down the "primer" button. If I hold the button down it sounds like I'm giving it too much gas. With the button down I am running at a bout 22 mph, if I push it down and let it go and push it down(and keep doiing that I get up to about 25 mph)normal full thotle.
Any Ideas?

I have a 91 40 horse that sometimes does the same thing. Sounds like a gas line issue? Does the primer bulb on your line stay hard as you drive? I had to replace connections between motor and line twice this year already. Also? is your valve closed on your tank? On Johnsons they need to be closed.

Hope this helps

Yep, I guess I cant help much then, but I'd still try listening for air leaks on you line connectors(at tant, and at motor).

Still sounds like the motor is not getting gas.

If the bulb is hard and the motor will not go full speed, I would bet you have a gummed up carb somewhere that is not allowing gas to flow freely into the engine. It may also be time for a new fuel filter as well. Either of those would give you the same issues.

I'd start with the fuel filter (preventative maintenance anyway to replace it) and test...if nothing changes, time to clean and rebuild the carbs...

I had the same issue with my old johnson 50. The throttle cable tension control had come loose. The more I ran the boat the looser it got. Pull the top off and just make sure it's tight. Might be a simple fix.

Is it possible I don't have a fuel filter on my motor? i bought it used with the boat, so I don't have a manuel. I am ordering one today with a fuel pump, I could not see a filter last night in the fuel line.

I talked with a machanic and he's sure it is carborator issue. He thinks it is a clogged fuel injector, how hard can be for me to take it apart and clean it all with Gumout and reassemble it?

That motor has two carbs, so tear them both down and rebuild. I would purchase a rebuild kit, which will have everything you need to do it correctly.

the only thing you need to be careful of are getting the linkages set correctly, and adjusting the fuel/air mixtures correctly. May not be a bad Idea to have the carbs syncronized after the rebuild.

The rebuild itself is not very hard at all... Just be sure to take your time, and lay the parts out as you disassemble.

My 40 Horse Johnson had a similar problem 6 years ago. A new fuel pump fixed the problem. Not sure if your problem is the same.
