I will be doing a little muskie fishing this weekend and I'm wondering if people can help explain the whole sunset/full moon/moon set and rise that goes on.

From what I've gathered there can be a 'window' during all this activity when perhaps the muskies turn on a bit....looking to be on the water at the best times possible.

Any info is appreciated.

You said it yourself: there will (MOST LIKELY) be feeding windows during those time periods. I would focus more on the lunar phases than the sun rising/setting, but that's just from personal experience.

If the lunar phases occur at times you won't be on the water, make sure you are out for either sunrise or sunset, if possible. These time periods will simply help increase your odds of hooking up, IMO.

I would just fish when you can - local weather is going to trump solar and lunar times (good things to know for sure) Once you get fish location and if local weather is favorable, and you have the right presentation, and it is at the right depth, then SS, MR, MS can on occasion made a big difference but unfortunately the muskies don't always read the same books, mags, and internet disscusions that we do.

I don't have it all figured out as far as the feeding windows go but lately it seems the period right before moonrise is the best. A few times in the last couple of weeks, fish ate within 2 minutes of moonrise.

Throw that in this weekend with sunset times and I'd think the your best window would be an hour before dark through moonrise. I haven't personally done well lately after the moon was up if there were no clouds but I think if you have cloud cover this window could extend past moonrise. Good luck

The best solar/lunar window is when sunrise/sunset & moonrise/moonset occur up to an hour of each other. Full & new moons are even better. Last night, sunset was at 7:03 pm and (full moon) moonrise was at 6:52 pm. I caught a 37" at 6:45 pm, but that was right before a big, nasty storm hit. Weather is definetly the bigger factor. But if you can get the weather, SR/SS & MR/MS to line up like last night, there is a really good chance at catching a 'ski. However, I really, really believe that you should go fishing whenever possible, if you happen to be out when these things occur, then I guess it is something to look forward to.

Good Luck,
Dave

Great information. Thanks everybody. I'll be on the water all day Saturday and Sunday morning. It'll be interesting to see if there's action during my sunset/moonrise period of 7:01-8:05pm.

I fished yesterday in IL from 6am-8pm.
Moonset was 8:07am and I caught 1 at 8:20am & 8:30am (lost one at 8:25am also)

Moonrise last night was 7:07pm and I caught fish at 6:45pm & 6:47pm - 2 casts later.

I casted all day with only a lunch break. We had stable clear weather, it is what it is........

It does not always work like that, but it's hard to argue with the results yesterday.

All on the figure 8 by the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had the same thing on Wed evening. About 6:40, or just before that, I caught a fish, let her rest in the net for a minute, and released her. My next cast, so 6:45 maybe, the instant my bait hits the water I have another one. It was pretty cool, I'm not sure if I had even turned the reel once before I set the hook.

Sunset, moonrise, and a storm coming in....nice

Sunrise and moonset and moonrise and moon set have been rocking in SE Wisco. In just the hour around each period, the last two trips, we've gotten 5 fish in the boat and lost 3 others, not to mention 14 other fish that have followed. That's all in about probably 3 hours total time during those periods.

Were you on Forest Lake, too? If so, which lake did you catch it on? Mine was on Lake 1.

Got a 41" fattie to eat Friday night right before moonrise. She missed as I started the 8. I pitched back to her and she crushed it boatside.

Booyah!

Good job!

How was the action the rest of the day not around any lunar periods?

On Saturday we had an hour of rain around the lunch hour, then bright sunshine. Nothing doing until we got some major cloud cover in the afternoon and then they turned on.

We caught a 31, a 39 and a 42 all in one hour! All three hit mid retrieve, too. Bucktails.

Another guy then lost a 40 at the boat twenty minutes before moonrise. Nothing doing night trolling over this same stretch of water. Moon looked like a big peach.

Oh, and the 42, I raised her at 10am in the morning. A buddy then raised her at 4pm and I got her to eat at 4:30.

I got two on Saturday within 1/2 hour of moonset. First one about ten minutes before, and the second after. Sunday, we got a 30#+ flathead on a Believer, right at moonset. Pics to follow!

Looking to learn a bit more on this topic....will be getting out Saturday and I will have a 5:02pm moonset and a 6:46pm sunset. Weather looks to be warm and muggy.

We'll be out regardless starting around 3, but looking for people's thoughts when you have two Sets lined up fairly close together. Thanks.

Be on your best spot, especially if there is a wind/weather change coming. This could be a big fish window!
