Location: Nebraska | We got back from Canada Saturday night. Let me start by saying a good time was had by all, but the fishing was tough this year. No one caught more than two muskies over 36".
The trip started out great, with a 40 inch class fish hitting my Double Cowgirl the first night we arrived, but I couldn't keep her pinned. The next day was showing promise for the trip. One guy caught a 46 and a 35, his partner caught a 43 and I caught my personal best of a fat 46 x 20.
Then the bottom fell out. The weather turned nasty, with wind, rain and upper 30's temps. The water temp fell from 61-62 to 56-57 in two days and the fish were no where to be found. Not even a trolling bite.
Saturday looked to be a nicer day, weather-wise until I started the boat. It died and would not start again. We worked on it for a couple of hours and couldn't find the problem, so I thought we better get it to the mechanic. No mechanic on duty on Saturday. Tried five shops in Kenora. No one had a mechanic on duty on Saturday, which also meant no mechanic on Sunday. Got it in first thing Monday morning and they diagnosed it as a bad key switch. Took the boat to Kenora to make sure the switch was a match and they tried it and found out it was not the key. Long story short, the guy dug around for a bit and found a little fuse on the ground side of a lead. Replaced the fuse and it was good to go. Two and a half days lost. Unfortunately, Ron (dux2bux) lost the last two days of his trip. We did finally drop the trolling motor and go with the wind Saturday afternoon until dark and one of the other boats pulled us back to camp and we did rent a boat Sunday, but it's tough to muskie fish without a trolling motor.
Got back on the water Monday afternoon and partner caught a 38" fish-his first muskie ever.
Went to another spot and three casts later he had a mid-40's fish on. Tried to net it green and it got out of the net. He had it on for a while afterwards, but it got off.
Bouncing weather between hot and cold, cloudy and sunny with front after front meant no fish for anyone Tuesday and Wednesday.
Thursday morning, I managed a 38 1/2" fish. It was the only fish caught in the last three days.
Friday, our last day, partner gets a 36"er to finish out our trip. One of the other boats got a 43" in the morning as well.
All in all, it was a tough trip, but a good time as usual.
