Started making my own flashabou bucktails several weeks ago, just recently making up a few double 10s. This fish ate a double 10 in a sort of "crappie" pattern (pearl, pearlescent, black material with twin nickel blades) on the 8. Quite the rush and a good feeling of accomplishment catching one on a bait you've made yourself.

39" falling to "The Slut" (hey, you've got your Gerry Girls, Showgirls, Cowgirls, Glitter Bitches, "boat sluts", etc...). The fish that hit was also EXTREMELY HOTTTTT on the bait, swiping and missing 3-4 times before barely closing its yap on the back hook in the 8.

Awesome looking fish! Congratulations on getting one on your own bait...I can imagine that's a darn good feeling.
Keep the fish coming and post a pic or two of your baits.

I'll get some pics up tonight. I have to give credit to Gerry Carrol. He has helped me a lot through this process.

The double 10s have two full packs of Hedron flashabou for a very large profile, but I've gotten hold of some 1/32 material made by another company that I may start using instead (same amount of material, stiffer/more resilient, etc).

I make my own tailes and can truly appreciate the feeling. That is awsome man, hard to use store bought tailes though after the feeling of having success on your own lol

I wanted to start making my own for a few reasons. 1) Try my hand at making baits. What did I have to lose? 2) Make up my own color combos without having to wait for someone to make them up and send them to me. 3) Cost. No offense to those that build them and sell them for profit, but paying $25 for a bait I can make myself for around $10 can't be beat...

Here are pics of the baits, just a sample of what I've made so far. The first pic is a 12" gizzard shad next one of the bigger double 10s I've made. The second pic just shows a few and a smaller double 8 (around 8") for size comparison. The colors in that pick are from left to right - "Crappie," blue/silver/silver blades (obviously), orange/black/silver-orange blades (new material with a thicker 1/32" diameter), and holo silver/white-chart blades. The last pic is a close-up of the crappie pattern which took the fish in the above post.

It's a shame this forum will only let users post pics under 100 KB. Bigger and you'd see more detail.

Keeping that back hook sharp is right. That fish was hooked so lightly (immediately apparent when I set the hook) that I tried to barely put any tension on her and started moving with her as she swam toward the back of the boat. Of course, as most boatside fish do she went ballistic. Fortunately, Reelwise had seen the fish snapping behind the bait and had the net in hand knowing she'd eat in the 8. When she went ballistic she jumped out of the water clearing the gunwale of the boat. At the peak of her jump she threw the hook, Reelwise scooped in a "last ditch effort" to nab the fish... I looked down in utter horror at realizing I had lost my first fish on that bait, then Reelwise lifted the net a bit from beneath the boat and to my delight the fish was sitting in the net oh so peacefully. It was at that moment that my jaw dropped and a bug flew in it (true part of the story, Reelwise thought I was throwing up... no, just a bug)!!!

Nate, I guess you don't have to ask Brandyn about that story anymore... lol

Everyone does the "last ditch scoop" when a fish gets off right at boatside, but I've never seen anyone come up with the save before!! Half that catch is Reelwise's!!!
