I have yet to hop on the cowgirl train, but I will probably break down and start soon. All my reels are either Calcuttas or Morrums with a few older ABU 6500's mixed in. Which reel would be the best bet? I do have an ABU power handle laying around.

anything with a power handle will make your life much easier.

Toss that power handle on one of your Morrums would be my suggestion.

My real suggestion would be buy a 7000, but if you want to use a reel you already own go with the Morrum and the power handle

calcutta or a morrum with a power handle will get the job done....
as Jonesi mentioned...imo don't use a rod with a soft tip....
stiff long 8'6 or 9 foot rods rock for big tails.

Wow.....a reply in 2 minutes, thanks.

I'll slap that handle on the Morrum for the short term, long term I will look at other options. I am always slow to hop on the new bait train....I just started throwin a weagle last year.

Thanks

Any reel will work. Even a C4 would work (for a while)

The things that will make life easy for you (i.e being able to throw them for 8-10 hours at a time) are as follows:

1. Lower gear ratio -- requires less effort on the retrieve. While a faster reel would seem like a wise choice, the amount of effort required to crank that reel under a load all day makes it NOT FUN. Besides -- a high gear ratio reel will not hold up well under those conditions.
2. Wide (fat) spool -- the more line you pick up per crank of the handle, the less times you have to crank the handle
3. A power handle -- leverage is a good thing.

AND, (As silly as it sounds) pick a handle that does not hurt your hands. All power handles are not created equal. I won't name names, but after a while, certain brands of handles just plain hurt your fingers.

The rod can make a huge difference as well. Steve

I'm putting it on an 8' avid. Hopefully that is enough, if not maybe a 7'6" premier as its a little stiffer.

I haven't tried an Abu 7000, but my Calcutta 400B seems to have enough cranking power. I find that I am more limited by my left hand/wrist which is palming the reel. It gets more tired and achy after a day of cranking Cowgirls than the right which is cranking the handle. I thought about getting a 7000, but worry that it may actually put more stress on the left wrist. Comments anyone?

It will save your wrist if you switch your rod hand to the forward grip instead of the reel. It was a hard habit to break but, it worked for me. Pat

A new comer to the field would be the Okuma Induron 400. Get a power handle for it and you'll feel some smooth cranking. Used one for a week on Eagle throwing nearly 100% double 10 bladed Muskie Mojo XXs and couldnt be happier.

also another one that might be worth a look, that I hadn't even considered until just seeing it recently is the Quantum (yes quantum) Cabo CLW20pts...level wind, instant anti reverse...only question would be does the spool engage with the turn of the handle or manually....160 bucks, sweet power handle, 4.1 to 1, 5 ball bearings...I have their cabo pts reel and it is bulletproof...saltwater reels...just like penns...

2 things:

1. Cabo PTS is a great reel...just not for Cowgirls!
2. Abu 7000iC3, got one this year, fantastic for hard-pulling blade baits

$.02

just bought a new abu 7000hsn narrow body reel. the black one not gold. this is a great reel or any 7000 for big bladded bucktails and grinding big spinnerbaits. I just bought this reel today and noticed it has a knob on the spool for the line to attach to. My question is do I tie my braided line to this or do I still need to back it with mono? Also own a 400 calcutta and bought a shimano power handle for it, saltwater handle. Nice big grippy handle for the 10 sized bucktail blades. same handle on calcutta 700 I think.
