Posts: 476 Location: WI | Okay.....I have had this happen on three reels (2 Abus and a Penn) in the last couple of years. I just got a brand new Penn 975 and the level wind is getting stuck on the left hand side. 1.) What causes this? 2.) Is there a quick adjustment that I can make to fix it? I have a tourney coming up in two and half weeks and I don't have time to send it in. Thanks, GotOne

| what causes this? pawl and/or worm gear is damaged. doesn't take much dirt in the mechanism to cause this problem. the quick adjustment? replace pawl and worm gear. abu's' are easy to work on, can't speak of penns as i have never opened one up. my level wind problems of the past were probably due to lack of regular cleaning, and leaving the reels unprotected in the open boat while trailering. since i went to regular self-maintenance, and transporting the reels (and rods) inside the truck at all times, my level winds have been problem-free. | |||

| i've had this happen with dirty and/or loose pawls, not necessarily damaged. first thing i'd do is to take the pawl off, clean the gear, and replace it - making sure it's properly re-seated. that's always fixed it for me. | |||

Posts: 1270 | It sounds like the worm gear and pawl are bad. I recomend replacing both of them as if you just replace the pawl odds are that it will happen again soon as they work together and there is probably a groove in the worm gear also. I don't know where you live but good luck finding a worm gear and pawl for your Penn sitting in a store!

| per Chuck Nelson: http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=33... People are burning up worm gears and pawls on the newer reels because of weeds, dirt and grime. This builds up in the groove on the frame and the top of the line guide cannot move over as far as it needs to. In turn, the bottom is forced to continue to move and you groove your worm gear, put a flange on the side tooth of the worm gear, and ruin the pawl. This occurs on the reels with the thumb rest on them. The tolerance is much, much tighter with the thumb rest on as opposed to having it off. There is absolutely no reason to keep the thumb rest off though. Do as I suggested and that is go buy yourself a new toothbrush and replace your old one. Keep the old toothbrush in a zip lock bag with a bottle of the Abu OIL and you will eliminate your troubles. All you have to do is brush out the cross bar on the frame that the line guide runs in and you will be much, much happier. REMEMBER, IF YOU REPLACE A WORM GEAR, REPLACE THE PAWL AT THE SAME TIME; THIS IS A MUST!!!!!!! | |||

Eventually the levelwind will fail. If the the mechanism that holds together the pawl is metal, it may just loosen it up. If it is plastic, it will break in half.
