I love the big Jakes, so this is by no means a criticism. I've just noticed a gradual change in behavior with each new Jake I purchase. My old ones with the smaller hardware (line-tie and hook hangers) seem to have a much more exaggerated side roll and flash. The newer ones with the different lip (cut off corners) and larger hardware seem to have more "tail wag" like the old bass-o-renos and less side roll. Is this my imagination or are others noticing this too.

Not that I mind tinkering with baits, but I never had to "doctor" a Jake before to get it to to really FLASH and ROLL. I thought it was my imagination or a changing expectation of the bait... but when I snap on one of the "original" jakes... there really does seem to be a difference in my opinion. Am I crazy???

I have a couple older style baits from them that are just awesome action and ill swear by them over the newer style ones,I did have a 39" fish crack my 10" jake apart last summer in the net,I wish they would come back to the older style,Ill agree with you this time!!

Jason,
I do agree with the newer one it seems like on the figure 8 it will have a nice wobble but then every so often it just goes straight and does nothing where the older one has a nicer wobble and stays consistant all the way threw the retrieve, even in the 8.

Ditto, I wish they would go back to the original, other than an occasional lip that would fall off the older ones were awesome.

I agree as well... I am buying all the older ones I can find at swap meets, been buying more Grandma's and Slammers as well better consistency in product...

I'm not sure what happened but last night I wen't to pick up few more Squirly Burts and noticed there is a big difference in some of the paint jobs as well, hence moving the company from Wausau to Indiana...

I'm glad they addressed the quality issue with the lips not falling out and leaks but I'm starting to get disapointed in the way they run....refering to both Jakes and Burts..

Great baits, good company, they'll replace your bad product no questions asked but it's frustrating from a consumer standpoint...and expensive..!

Jason etc...what do you guys consider old...how many yrs ago...I got 2 or 3 that are at least 2 yrs old + one is missing his left eye....not from a fish either; must have hit a rock or something....[:0] [:sun:]

Hey Sponge, if there that old you got the originals, as I said the only problem I had with just a few was the lip comming off. Try running a small bead of epoxy around where it connects to the body, that should rectify any problem. Hope this helps buddy.[:sun:]

Sponger....

You have some of the origionals, hang on to them...follow the above instructions on reinforcing the lip.

Here's my "eye tip" of the week. I honestly believe that the eyes made by "witchcraft" (like the ones on Undertakers/Phantoms) are some of the best out there. If you can get some of these use a thin coat of epoxy/liquid nails, etc. to hold them on a Jake.. Trust me guys...it makes a difference.

If you can't find any of these eyes call Crazy D's Tackle at 715-874-6996 or e-mail them at crazydtackle.com and they can send you some. I'm sure Crash or Tony or one of the boys in the south would have them too.

Better yet Sponger...wait till you move to WI and I'll show ya how to modify'em meself...:)

Good. I'm glad to see that the subtle change in action is real and I'm not just losing my mind. Jakes are still great baits of high quality and durability.... and I'll continue to use and purchase them. Big Jakes have always been one of my favorite FLASH BAITS for open water, but when I see a reduction in flash from them... I get frustrated because it takes more WORK to twitch and rip them hard enough to make them do what I want them to do. The new holoform patterns are incredible too, but with less side roll, you don't get as much potential flash as they could produce. Anyone have a simple trick to get them rolling on their side more when twitched, ripped, or trolled? I'm more interested in making them work better when casting to minimize the fatigue they generate..... cause I'd like to cast them all day long... but the aging shoulders don't agree.

I think that huge lure attatchment has something to do with it. I've noticed on the real shallow water situation that I like to twitch the 10", that they don't respond as quickly, nor do they have that distinct slow wobble on the really slow surface retrieve like my old ones. Still good lures though, and tough to beat in many situations. I still like all the colors, and wish they would quit changing them, because it makes me buy that many more.

TR, if I am old.... than you are ANCIENT (ha ha).

Brian, I wish your dreams COULD come true. They can, if you are willing to pay a little more than $5.

Mr. Shillinger, I agree 100% on the SLOW wobble. That is primarily what tipped me off to the difference, since if they didn't roll as nice on a twitch I'd just hit them harder. Late fall I like to "slow roll" the Big 10 Jake with just an occasional blast (twitch) and that is what really got me thinking about the subtle differences.

As for tinkering them up... I have mastered that talent. But, I have less and less time to tinker with my two boys growing up fast and am learning to appreciate having a bait do what you want right from the package.

Great bait, great colors, keep making them Mania Tackle.... but if you can "tweak" them back to what they used to be, I'll be one happy camper.

Thanks for advice fellows...Mark, I've been holding on to them but will have to put them down soon as I'm getting VERY hungry, plus my arms are getting tired...JLONG...after what you said about being "old" at your age I swallowed a handful of Motrin + washed it down w/ a pint of Geritol! They do have a nice wobble to them....too bad I don't get to use them more....don't take that as a sign that they MIGHT be for trade one of these days.....[:sun:]

I LIKE THEM TOO!
THEY LEAK!! I WAS OUT ON KINKAID THIS WEEK (THROWING JAKES) AND .......THEY SEEMED TO COLLECT WATER AFTER A FEW HOURS OF CASTING. THEY SEEMED TO DO THE SAME THING YOU MENTION...WHAT'S UP WITH THAT??

Muskygirl. There was a bad batch for one year that had that problem. Right now all the new ones dont leak and all is well again.

If you have a leaker, fill it with foam.[;)]

I believe the issue is the lip, not the bait itself. The bait itself is better... heavier hangers, better fit, and much less prone to leaking. But I think cutting the lip corners off changed the water flow around the bait, and that is why we're noticing the change in action. They could easily go back to the old lip design if someone approached Pete and Ben with this issue. (The old and new lips are fuly interchangeable.)

Steve, I hope you are correct. Simply putting the "old" lip onto the "new and improved" body would be an easy fix for Ben and Pete. If that simple change could ressurect the sweet old-time wobble of the big Jake, then I could shut up and catch more fish.

jlong, I have two 6" ones from 1996. are these the older ones? I see the patterns are different and the lipshape also differs a little. I like the action but have only caught one pike on it while trolling.[:blackeye:]

I do not use the 6 inch Jake as it is too bouyant for my personal style. I like the 8 inch Jake... but only for violent twitching. My comments on this post have been exclusive to the 10 inch Jake. It is one of the few baits that I can fish withOUT jerking, twitching, ripping, etc. continuously during the retrieve. I like to thread it through cover with a straight retrieve and only give it a kick once every 5-10 turns of the reel handle. BUT, when the bait isn't rolling obscenely from side to side at a slow retrieve... I lose confidence. As I retired some of my originals with the small diameter line-tie and hook hangers and replaced them with the "new" one's is when I noticed the difference.

Its not a problem... just something I noticed and was curious if others did too. I know how to "tinker" with them to make them do what I want them to do (which may not be what they were designed for) so it is no big deal.
