I picked up a 7000iHSN and Shimano Compre 8' MH at Thorne Bros this week and got a chance to get out with it that night with Ed Beese in WI (Thanks for a great trip, Ed!)

First off, it's gonna take some getting used to after 7 footers and 5600's. This thing is big and HEAVY.

I was dragging a DC and spinnerbaits. The reel casts fine and is quiet casting but has a LOT of gear noise retrieving. Really whiny. Is this common? I need to pull it apart and get the grease out of it and get it oiled, but seemed kind of loud right out of the box.

Call Thornes and ask them, if it is defective they will take care of you...

Or call Abu Garcia and ask them.

I had a 7001HSH that was very noisy and I ended up sending it back. They sent me a new one (and the old spool filled with my superline). It's much better now.

the big Abu's are a bit more "noisy" and "grindy" than some reels for sure...the newer 7000s aren't as bad but they are never going to be as quiet as a TE or Luna imo.
also you might have some grit or something in the gears...take a look at the threads above Lambeau put up how to clean and lube...go that route first....then send in if needed....

one of mine was a bit grindy...this was after quite a bit of use...sure enough it just had some grit/grime in it, I thoroughly cleaned it and washed all the parts good, then re greased and lubed and it is not as grindy but the ABu's just seem to be a bit louder than some reels in the 7000 size...imo.

but i agree, if it is bad, have it looked at or send it back to Abu in Spirit lake..if it is new they will cover it and send you a new one or fix it....

I had the gears switched out to the 4.3:1's and absolutely love the thing. Love the retrieve ease, the handle, etc. It does squeek some on the retrieve but works good.

I had the gears switched out to the 4.3:1's and absolutely love the thing. Love the retrieve ease, the handle, etc. However, it squeeks like a mutha when reeling in no matter what I do(oil/greasewise). I am having trouble getting the cast control 'just right' too. That could be my fault as I always way overspool all of my reels and have the break backed right off, and this one might just be a bit touchier. Just seems that on some casts it is perfect, then on some it wants to 'hang-up'. I will run it for the rest of the season, then take it to Chuck Brod for a go over to see if he can stop the squeeling that people in other boats can hear.

Jason -

I was told by Abu that you cannot switch gears on the new Abus between low and high gear ratio. This may be causing the squealing, and if they were right I would guess you are looking at a major failure down the road.

Reef Hawg, If you put 4.1 gears in your iHSN then there is going to be excesive play between the pinion gear and the spool shaft as the 4.1 and 4.3 pinion gears have different sized holes in them to facilitate the different diameter spool shafts. I would put the 5.3 gears back in and see if that cures your problems.

Thanks. I planned to go through it, and thought it could be normal noise, but if everyone had said they were dead quiet, I would have sent it in. Not real bad, but definitely more noise than my couple-year-old 6500's and 5600's.

I bought 2 from Blue Water bait and tackle in Bemidji, Minn. Was out for 4 days this week on Vermillon, was burning big Cowgirls and Large buck tails. Blew one up on the hook set day one and by day 3 had the second one seize on me could even reel. I don't know about the noise had no noise but did get alot noiser the more I used. Then it sounded like a mouse on a squekie wheel. Then you got the grinding like I have never hearad before on a reel, and making a ton of back lashes, no matter how I adjust the cast controll. I think they blow!!!!!!!! Had 2 Record series reels lastg year and similar things happen by the end of the season. I don't Pure Fishing is putting out product like they use to. I think I might have to look into new reels all together. Maybe Shimano I guess. Anyone else have any ideas.

Just talked to Chuck Brod(local reel doctor) said that changing those gears out is no problem at all and there is no size difference that will affect performance. After some serious lubrication, the squeeking has ceased.

They're dropping like flies.3 HSN's and 1 HS this week. Time to look for another manufacturer in the Orient.2 from clients in my boat and 2 from another.Back to the drawing board.3 "locked up" and another had problems with the lever staying down.Very disappointing. Steve

I tried one last season, but I am a Daiwa guy through and through.I've had 15 Lunas in rotation the past 2 1/2 yrs. and not a glitch. I'll throw a Dubba 10 for 14 hours a day.I've discovered another key to throwing big blades. A heavier rod, physically heavier, not action wise will offset the pull of these by 50%! I've switched to a 9 footer built on Thornes C-Series blank and it rocks. Ahhh, so little time. Steve

Are you guys alao having problems with the free spool levers on the 7000HSNi's not engaging regularly? Its very annoying to have to move the spool manually a little each way just to ge the free spool lever to properly engage. Any quick cure for that?

use lubriplate grease on it and you will notice it quiets down a lot. i have 2 7000ic3's and after the first trip they did the same thing. the grease from garcia=garbage. wd40 all the parts on the inside and re-lube it. the abu garcia reel oil is really good but the silicote grease doesnt stick to anything. lubriplate clings to everything when it gets the slightest bit of moisture. it us used in lower units of outboards and after 10 years is still right where it was put. most boat dealers sell it for about 5 bucks a tube. i got a 10 oz tube for 3 bucks. that will last you a lifetime. grease the entire plate on the crank side. then all contacts of other parts. even grease the shaft that the drive gear rides on. your reel will feel slightly stiff at first if you have no line on it but after 10 mins it will be smoother than new. also grease the worm gear. this gets a lot of dirt and debris in it and is often the source of noise.

Steve, have you had any trouble with the instant anti on any of your 15 Lunas?? I have two of them and they both skip on more than occasion. I cannot use mine for jerk bait reels now without worrying about them slipping. Love the reels, and am having much better luck with them than my now sold or traded Calcutta Te's, but I would like to clear up this issue. Some said a possible grease type issue..? I know that my old cvx's would do this in the late fall, but the new Luna doing so, is a bit perpexing.

Brad, I now second the 975 Penn. So far, so great for my dubba 10's.

Oh, and steve, thanks for the rec on the heavier rod. Switched a couple of my heavy 8' glass comp Figs to Ac-10 rods, and waala!!! A full weeks vacation and some surprisingly tire free hours and good hooksets later has me convinced. The thing even loads em up better, and I realize better cast length. Thanks.

Stein is your reel the gold color model or the new black color model? I posted on the other abu reel forum for the hsn which is the black model with the new lever switch to engage/disengage the spool? I had the gold model and it lasted only 1.5 years for me!!! That model was noisy at first and really never changed over time. Last week I casted a bait out and the reel never engaged, it just stuck the handle wouldn't move. I had to bring the line in with my bare hands, thank god a fish didn't hit the bait!!! That night I took it apart and cleaned and lubed it up. I did this 5 times!!! and the handle never moved!!!! Went and bought the new black model hsn the next day and well read the other forum and you will see. I'm going back to the 6500, penn 965, shimano 400, and quantum pt cabo. These reels for me don't break!!!!! I use a bass sized "green monster" shimano curado too sometimes, they are bullet proof!!!
