I am taking my boys, 5 and 8, camping. I am looking for recommendations on a safe, family campgroung where I can have a site on the water and maybe get the boys into some fish. I am mainly looking in the area between The Petenwell and Lake Wisconsin. I have taken them to Jellystone before I am looking for a little more nature. I am not bringing a boat so sandbar camping is pretty much out. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. The boys are excited and so is their Dad.

Hi - You might try Point Bluff Resort-> http://www.pointbluff.com/

They have canoes & tubes. The river section between Castle Rock & WI Dells does have some muskies in it, so bring some muskie gear. I do know of a 56lb "Big Nosed Buffalo" that was caught at Point Bluff by a guy bank fishing for cats w/a nightcrawler. Plenty of space for exploration, islands & sandbars. The river is pretty shallow in spots, but there are some deep holes so make sure they are wearing their life jackets.

Have fun!

there are two campgrounds on petenwell one on the east side and one on the west side. THe one on the east side has a swimming area and aplayground a I think its adams county park called petenwell park http://www.adamscountyparkswi.com/
the picture is of the marina on the east side we have done very good in there for 12-14inch crappies there isnt a whole lot of shore fishing oppertunity on petenwell so I think this would be your best bet!

Adams County Park is a very nice facility. There is some shore fishing to be had there. Try Devils Elbow to the north for shore fishing. You'll get some Crappies, perch, and even walleyes there. Also, the Tubes, further up has some decent fishing from shore. There are some gators in the pond there. They swim in through the tubes!

Yes there are some shore fishing spots but you have to drive to them all if you go up into nekoosa the entire bank is lined with trails. you can go almost to the mouth of petenwell on public land but it all depends on how much walking you want to do! devils elbow is good for musky too. the tubes is a good spot as is strong praire flats which you can shore fish from any of these spots and the majority of them is on the east side of the lake you can also go down to chicago ave and walk the bank to the necedah dam which is really good smallie fishin or you can go just below the dam and fish castle rock for some sturgen you can also fish the steep shoreline on the way to adams county park the water is really green right now so if there is a west wind plan on smelling crap in the air the entire time you are fishing one more thought is if you drive to devils elbow you can go to the boat landing there and walk out on the pennisula to a pretty good musky spot too! so I guess there is alot of shore fishing spots it all depends on how many miles you want to put on!!

Lake DuBay has DuBay Shores and Lake DuBay Log Cabins. All species are present and there are plenty of places to find them.

Some decent islands to camp out on Pete too at the mouth, or out from tubes which are down stream of the elbow. Drop me an email for directions to a couple of the bigger islands, and I'll check it upon my return from alaska in a few days.

Thanks to all for the replies. We got into some fish, enough to keep the boys busy. Highlight was a 8 pound cat that my 8 year old caught casting a rapala. Nice fight on 6 lb. test. Thanks again for all the help.

Well, we went all over. We hiked, explored, waded, and fished below the Castle Rock dam on Thursday. Thursday evening we headed to the Pete and camped on the East side. The old man got a stiff back. I am old and soft, the ground is hard. We headed south to fish an old haunt, the Montello dam, and cleaned up on the gills, some large rough fish, a couple smallies, and the cat. As I was grilling, my 8 year old decides he wants to do some casting with a lure so I tied on a floating rapala for him. I hear a huge laugh from my two boys and looked down to see the 8 year olds pole doubled. This is a spinning rod with 6 lb. test and the fish is taking him wherever it wants. By now a small crowd is around him, and after tightening the drag a lttle, on his own, he gets the fish in close enough for me to go down on the rocks and grab it. It wasn't a giant cat but I am sure to an 8 year it was huge. I would guess 8-10 pounds. The boys were laughing the whole time. I was particularly proud because he did it all by himself. He casted, retrieved, and caught without the help of his dad.I wanted to help bad, but sometimes you just have to let them alone. Stayed in a bed in Madison and hit the whirlpool to soothe my aching bones on Friday night. I know, what a whimp, but my boys were all about a pool and who was I to argue with a sore back. We also hit Kennedy Park near New Lisbon on Thursday and boy were there a lot a biting flies. I pulled the plug on that place quick. The bluffs in the Camp Douglas area are spectacular. Thanks for the help on the Campgrounds, nice family atmosphere and clean. It was a great quick getaway.
