Location: Richland Center, WI. | I probably should have saved this question for a trivia contest or something. Has anyone ever had any experience with an Ambassadeur 6500-C3 2 speed? It says on the decal that it is autoshift. Gear ratio is 6.1:1/3.8:1. I have never seen one of these before. How does it autoshift? The reel has a knob between the handle and the star drag that looks like you turn to shift speeds but that does not explain the autoshift. Any ideas? Is this a decent reel or what? Just curious.

Location: Rhinelander | I know a little. I bought a used one this spring and used it until the "transfer gear" went out. I called Sportsmans Repair and he explained the reel to me really well. Its based on the premise of an automatic transmission. The knob sets the friction at which the reel downshifts to 3.8. Chuck said the idea is that when you are fighting fish you have power and if it makes a run at the boat you can pick up the slack fast. He said they were expensive reels and it would be worth putting the $30 or $40 into it and get it fixed. I liked the high speed retrieve for smaller bucktails and jerkbaits. |

Location: Richland Center, WI. | Great. Glad to hear someone has one and uses it. How exactly do you determine where to set the tension on the knob? Tried the abu web site and could not find info on this reel. |
