Posts: 572 | I just posted this on another discussion board and thought I others might be interested. A couple of years ago I was told to NOT sharpen a VMC cone cut hook. Since others questioned whether or not to sharpen the hooks, I sent VMC an email telling them that I would be posting their response on a muskie discussion board. The subject was "vmc 8650 BZ 4/0 hooks". I wanted to make sure they understood I wasn't talking about smaller hooks. Here's the email response..... hello and sorry for the late reply. We are all in vegas for the international fishing show. My answer is: NEVER EVER SHARPEN A HOOK. When you sharpen a hook you do two things: 1- you remove the coating on the point which will cause the hook to rust faster and increase the chances to break. 2-you are changing the molecular structure of the wire wich is basically changing the hardening of the tip of the point which will make it more britle...this is the last you want. My suggestion is to use the CONE CUT as it is. It is sharp enough to penetrate and the conical tip was designed to hold the pressure applied by those big fish without bending. Before penetrating, you need the hook to stick inside the mouth of the fish. If you sharpen the point and make a too thin tip, when you set the hook, you ahve chances that the tip will either bend or break...we know the consequences. I hope I did answer your question. Thank you for using VMC hooks and good fishing! With my best regards, Cyrillle Mathieu VMC Inc VP sales and Marketing

Posts: 109 | We have been sharping hooks a long while now...all brands including the VMC's with no problems. Yes its true most "good quality" hooks are fairly sharp out of the box but we still hit them with a file to make them EXTRA sharp. Most of the guys I have fished with that are serious sharpen hooks even as they fish. If what he says is true I would be replacing hooks pretty often since rocks, fish, wood, etc can dull hooks... this would be a great deal for hook manufactures!
