Location: Storm Lake, IA | Just spent 14 hours of night fishing this weekend. Great time to be on the water my home lake is a boater paradise, so it was nice having the lake somewhat to my self. Nevertheless I didn't have any luck and was looking for some pointers.
First off the lake is gin clear, deep weed beds with the weed line in about 20 feet of water. No ciscos, main forage perch, suckers, and other rough fish. Little to no bucktail and topwater bite (did try both for a couple hours though) But my main weapon is a crankbait.
I was wondering if you guys like to go shallower at night, deeper at night, or the same place as you would during the day. And what types of crankbaits do you guys throw at night big wobble, tight wiggle, rattles, no rattles, shallow running, deep running.
Thanks for the help, I would like to get this night thing cracked this summer first time really putting the time into it |

Like you, my friend and I set catching a fish while night fishing as one of our goals this year. It didn't take too long as I caught one around 3:30 a.m. two weekends ago. I was using a JackPot (WTD topwater) and a 38" musky couldn't resist it. It was really nice to have it pay off as we woke up around 2:00a.m. from our tent to go out. The water was really pressured the day before and we also were on a full moon right at moonset a little before sunrise. Worked out just as planned. Aside from that, I guess I can't give too much advice.
The fish was caught in pretty shallow water; probably 5' or less on a lake with semi-clear water. Many of the things I've read on night fishing have said to try a little shallower than usual, but there will always be muskies everywhere....just seems they're usually a little more active when shallow.
Good luck on your night 'ventures, Jake Bucki |
