Posts: 93 Location: Minneapolis, MN | I've already had three line break offs this year on the cast. This has never happened before. The break is clean and quite a ways up from the leader and knot. Just a loud "pop" and a sailing lure, followed by some choice words. These were on two reels both spooled with Spectron Blackspot, 80lb. Line is new this year and I frequently tie new knots. Anyone have trouble with this line? Or did I just get a bad batch?

carefully check your line guides on your rod. a good way to do this is to run a q-tip through them and look for anywhere that the cotton sticks or hangs up. it sounds like you might have a crack or chip in one of the guides that is fraying/cutting your line.

Posts: 93 Location: Minneapolis, MN | I think only one was a backlash break. I will check the guides -- that makes sense. Thanks!

Posts: 1996 Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | I had a eye get a nick in it last week. It took losing two Mag Dawgs in twenty casts for me to check it, but that was the cause. It sounds like you are having the same problem.

Use a piece of nylon stocking, better than a q-tip, run through guides.

Posts: 91 Location: Wausau | If you find that you have a chipped or cracked eye do you need to have that eye completely replaced or is there a way to "fix" the eye?

Posts: 8832 | I suppose you COULD put a new insert in the guide, but its probably a lot easier to replace the whole guide. If its the tip top it's about a 2 minute job. If its one of the others, I'd take it to someone qualified -- they'll need to re-wrap and re-glass that part of the rod. Not expensive, but unless you have a lathe and the right thread, and you know how to do wraps, it's not something you'd want to do yourself.

Posts: 21 | Been fishing Black Spot for years. 50 lb for pike, 80lb for muskies. Never had a failure, and is by far my favorite line out of PP, Tuf Line, etc... I'm not sure what the 80 actually tests out at, but I have wrapped it to a cleat on the boat when I have been snagged on sunken timber and have pulled up two or three 15 foot logs and straightened hooks out. Never broke the line.

You may have a backlash that is burried a little ways back from the regular cast distance as well. When I re-spool a customer's line, while taking off old line, there are some times when the reel gets taken out of my hand from a backlash deep in the spool. could go either way.
