Tony Runkel, Tim Duncan and Mark Chevalier, Twin Cities • Found: Big northern with sucker stuck in its mouth • Rainy Lake
(As told by Tim Duncan, Bloomington)
My buddies Tony Runkel of Shoreview, Mark Chevalier of Hopkins and I were fishing in a channel on the U.S. side of Rainy Lake on May 27 when we noticed a large northern rolling on the surface.
At first we thought it had been hit by a boat, but soon discovered that its eyes were apparently bigger than its stomach and mouth, because a 2- to 3-pound sucker was stuck in its mouth.
We removed the sucker, which of course was just fine, and worked for 30 minutes to revive the northern as best we could.
It slowly floated away.
We didn't hold out much hope for survival, but we didn't see it on the surface when we came by later.
