Fellas, I already own two Calcutta 400's, and AC 300, and two Millionaire CV-Z 253's ( got them for bass fishing a few years ago). I have been following the threads on here about gear ratios ( sounds like I want a 4 to1), fatigue, wearing out the reel, etc.......... What is the absolute best reel for these big baits? I am kind of partial to thumb bars, but other than that I am open to suggestions. The reel would only be used on DC's, CYCO spinners, etc...Read alot of you guys like the 7000 abu's, what is the best one? Also, is the 7000B comparable to the hsn, pro rockets??? If it's of any matter I am putting this reel on a Loomis 914C. Thanks.

Legend,

I'll be the first to throw out a reel you haven't mentioned: the Penn 975. Bought a used one this winter, tried it this weekend, and was VERY impressed. Can't say it's better than the Abus, but it costs a bit more (Must mean its better, right!? LOL), and has a push button rather than a lever. Very nice.

I use my Calcutta 400TE for throwing all my big baits. I can throw magnum dawgs and #10 Colorado's all day with ease!! The TE in my opinion is the best musky reel on the market right now.

I bought a 8'10" custom rod with a Abu 7000C3 specifically for burning cowgirls which I used for about 5 hours this weekend and it worked great... During the day I threw a cowgirl on a Calcutta TE and a 8'6" custom rod and it was ALOT more work to try to burn the cowgirl.. I agree that with a normal retrieve the TE will work fine, but if your planning on moving those cowgirls fast and was to be able to cast them all day I would go strickly to the 7000.. Plus that will save you about $200 from not buying a TE... I would use the TE for all other applications though...
Remeber too, that the 7000 is heavy, got a couple nice blisters on my hands from this weekend and they didn't come from looking at too much internet porn...

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll be getting a 7000. Basically, I am setting up this rod strictly for these big baits. I am snapping on a Supergirl or DBL CG on putting it on the side of the boat. Out of the 7000 series what is really the best model to get?? Or does it matter?

If money is no object, you might want to look at a Shimano 700 TE....

i might add i have tried all but the shimano calcutta's for the big doubles, i have an ics pro rocket and i still think for ease of casting / cast length, ease of bringing in the bait and still able to burn it the Penn still gets the nod for me over the ics pro rocket or the i hsn...

I have been using my 5:1 Pete Maina reel with a power handle on it while throwing the double #10's and the reel seems to bring them in easily. I think the key was adding that power handle to the reel. Gettin ready to go right now and add a couple of power handles i got in the mail today to my other reels.

I just got a couple 7000i hsn's in the mail and talked to our local ABU guru who is going to switch the 5.3's out for 4.1's for me. If you are interested in a 7000 size reel but don't want the bulk of the wide spool, you could always try that too. I wouldn't run a TE for the big double 10's man. After burning two of them up reeling in topraiders and gp thuimper spinnerbaits I realized too expensive a reel to put to the musky test anymore in my opinion. Wish I'd had better luck with Calcuttas as I know many who use them with no prob. I traded my last replacement out for a Luna, which has been a dream so far a month into season. I think I'll stick to the winch stlyes though for the heavy crankin from now on though.

that is kind of what I was thinking. My 400's and AC 300 work awesome right now and basically I don't want to trash them with these huge baits. I guess I would rather just get the right set up from the get go and then I'll have only one thing to blame if problems arise.
