| Here is a copy of an e-mail I received. I am not posting it to solicit muskies101. I don't personally know Laura or Ty. I only met them once, which was recently at the New London Musky Magic show. I have only done this to inform more musky fishermen about the hearings and hopefully encourage Wisconsin Residents to attend. Please take the time to read this and attend your spring hearings. Attention Musky Anglers, The Wisconsin Conservation Congress Hearings are important for musky anglers alike. The hearings are held simultaneously every spring in each county. There are four proposed rule changes that pertain to musky, all are biologically sound and have local support. The hearings will be held on Monday, April 8, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. at a location specified by each county. If approved (statewide), these proposed rule changes would take effect on April 1, 2003, unless otherwise indicated. There are many items on the agenda and we need people there to be sure the musky issues are voted on. If the state asks to skip an item to conserve time and no one objects the issue will get missed in a county. We need people at each meeting to make sure the Musky issues are voted on and to create enough votes to pass the issues this year. Bring a friend, or bring a whole club with you to the meetings. We have several counties that have representatives that will ensure these issues are voted on. If you would like a list of these counties, please email us at [email protected]. This is an important step to making Wisconsin a destination musky fishing location again. For information on the location nearest you, please visit: http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/nrboard/springhearings/notice/ For the complete list of proposed rule changes: www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/nrboard/springhearings/fish/ Or visit www.muskies101.com – the message board has information on the hearings as well. Feel free to ask/answer questions. We have a list of counties that will have representatives that are in-favor of the changes. These representatives will ensure that these proposed rule changes are voted on. We are requesting that you attend these hearings to support the much needed higher minimum size limits for muskellunge in Wisconsin. It is important for us all to attend these hearings in order to ensure better musky fishing in Wisconsin. The proposed rule changes are as follows: 15. INCREASE THE MINIMUM LENGTH LIMIT FOR MUSKELLUNGE TO 50" ON GREEN BAY, LAKE MICHIGAN (NORTH OF WALDO BLVD.) AND TRIBUTARIES. The Great Lakes strain (spotted) muskellunge rehabilitation program is an ongoing effort to reestablish the native muskellunge to Green Bay and Lake Michigan. The long-term goal of the rehabilitation project is to restore the native muskellunge population to Green Bay with sufficient natural reproduction to sustain the population. An interim goal is to capture mature wild muskellunge in Green Bay as an egg source for hatchery rearing. Mature fish currently exist in Green Bay but they are present at low densities, which limits the ability to capture enough fish to obtain eggs for rearing and continued stocking. Most of the females in the current brood stock, held in an inland lake, do not mature until they exceed 40" (the current minimum length limit). In addition, growth rates have been excellent and there have been numerous reports of anglers catching muskellunge well in excess of 40", indicating the potential for a trophy fishery. This proposal would provide additional protection to immature muskellunge, and should result in a trophy muskellunge fishery. 27. INCREASE THE MINIMUM LENGTH LIMIT TO 50" FOR MUSKELLUNGE ON CLEAR LAKE, ONEIDA COUNTY. There are 138 muskellunge waters in Oneida County. Several lakes have the potential to produce trophy muskellunge, if afforded conservative protection. However only seven lakes (5%) currently have regulations that differ from the statewide 34" minimum, six of which have 40" minimum length limits, and one with a 45" minimum. Periodic surveys will be conducted to monitor the muskellunge populations and evaluate this regulation. The current 45" minimum length limit on Clear Lake has improved the size distribution of muskellunge. However, with a 50" minimum size limit in place the lake could be managed at its optimum. Clear Lake has low muskellunge population density, a cisco/white sucker forage base, and a maximum depth over 90 feet giving it the potential to grow true memorable-sized fish. 30. INCREASE MINIMUM LENGTH LIMIT TO 40" FOR MUSKELLUNGE ON MOOSE LAKE, SAWYER COUNTY. When managing a trophy species that is long-lived, grows slowly, but attains large size at old age, any reduction in exploitation should result in more, bigger, older, fish. It is predicted that increasing the minimum length limit for muskellunge on Moose Lake, Sawyer County would increase the number of fish 34" and longer by 12% and the number of fish 40" and longer by 38%. This proposal has local support and passed as a county resolution at the 2000 Spring hearing. 31. INCREASE MINIMUM LENGTH LIMIT TO 45" FOR MUSKELLUNGE ON THE CHIPPEWA FLOWAGE, SAWYER COUNTY. The Chippewa Flowage, Sawyer County is one of the most famous muskellunge fisheries in North America, and has the potential to produce trophy fish. When managing a trophy species that is long-lived, grows slowly, but attains large size at old age, any reduction exploitation rate should result in more, bigger, older, fish. It is predicted that increasing the minimum length limit for muskellunge on Chippewa Flowage, Sawyer County would increase the number of fish 34" and longer by 12% and the number of fish 45" and longer by 44%. This has local support and passed as a county resolution at the 2000 Spring hearing. Please forward this to other concerned musky anglers. Thank you for your time, www.muskies101.com | |||

| This is a critical time for the Muskie Anglers in Wisconsin. We have a chance to ask for legislation that truly will effect the trophy potential on many waters in WIsconsin forever. Get to the meetings!! | |||

| Get out there and vote it is very important. Remember if you dont vote then you cant complain. See you at the meetings. Jim | |||

| Steve, As you stated, this is a "critical time" for Wisconsin. With the hearings less than a week away, how about locking this up at the top and possibly highlighting it some way instead of letting it slip onto the second page. Thank you, Brett Erickson | |||

| Brett, Unfortunately our software does not allow us to "lock" a thread at the top. I've been trying to keep this and other threads near the top. See you Monday. | |||

| in response to #15, i have a cottage on the nursery lake in Wis.. they have been stocking spots for about 10 or 12 years. this lake is 270 acres and has no inlet or outlet. the spots have to spawn in a tributary, and swim the shore looking for this, until they swim into a dnr fike net. the fish are transported to the hatchery, milked, and replaced back in the lake. these muskies are the most beautiful fish you'll ever see. purple and green spots on a pure silver background. greenbay, big cedar, and big green are the major targets. the preferred feeding depth is 100 ft. ciscos, what else. | |||

| TTT. I will be at the Al Ringling theatre to cover Sauk Co. | |||

| #30 and #31s percentage numbers show me that in the 34" catagory 12% of the muskies caught are going in the skillet.in the high 30" and low 40" range there is a abnormally large percentage going on the wall! get the minimum as high as you can everywhere. then have the dnr sell frozen muskie fillets to those that can't survive without![8)] | |||

| bttt Take the time Monday night (April 8 at 7PM) to do your part in improving Wisconsin's Musky fishing. Not sure where your county's meeting place is then cut and paste this address into your address bar: http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/nrboard/springhearings/notice/ You don't have to go to the meeting of the county you live in, if a different meeting place is closer you can go to that one. | |||
