I am looking for a nuetral boyant material or even one that sinks that is not heavy. I would like to carve it into a tube 1 inch long by 1 inch in diameter

neutral buoyant with hardware on?
try hard maple. its a neutral buoyant wood.. it really depends on hardware and paints.. them you may get into paint adherence issues.

I too use hard maple for my personal gliders. Make your bait and put in your terminal tackle and use 5/0 hooks. Hang your bullet weights on the hooks untill you get what you want. I snip off lead until my baits are good to go. I usually try to get the bait just slightly bouyant. Drill holes where you need them and put the weights in, paint, clear, etc. and then tank test again. I fine tune with replacing the 5/0 hooks with 4/0 were needed. For me this works out very well. I can get baits that are just slight risers (1-2"/second) or slight sinkers (1-2"/second). These I can also make nose down or nose up depending on where teh 4/0 and 5/0 hooks are placed. You may need to adjust for the leader too depending on its weight but that is if you really want to fine tune it.

James

PS-Water is still your perfect neutral bouyant material
