Posts: 392 Location: KY | I sure screwed this one up! I thought I would try to make a “Low Rider” type top water so I went to the local hobby shop and picked up some 0.78” music wire, brass tubing, and sheet metal. I sandwiched the brass tube between two separate pieces of pine for each body part. I then sanded them to round using a belt sander (I don’t own a lathe). I shaped the fins with shears and a file and inserted them between the wood pieces using the wire as pins to secure them in place. Everything went together well with epoxy, paint, and more epoxy. OK here is the screwed up part. Apparently “music wire” does not mean stainless steel. IT RUSTS! And to add insult to my injured ego the steel sheet I bought was not stainless either. It rusts too. I feel like an idiot. Don’t let this happen to you. Now that I have confessed my mistake, I feel better. LOL. What are some of your learning experiences? Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Posts: 1504 Location: Oregon | Oh well those are beautiful baits, I love that top bait. Make sure you dry them out after each use and maybe run a towel with a bit of WD40 over the metal pieces and they will last for years! Great job! Mistakes? Never made one! Now that is a lie! jed v.

Posts: 223 Location: Victoria,MN | Nice looking lure Bruce. Lets see now, skimping on clear coats is not a good idea, dropping the cutting tip of my duplicator onto the live center of my lathe dulls the hell out of it, that gets expensive. There are many more. I like to think that if I learn from my mistakes it is a positive experience. Edited by T-Bone 5/16/2007 5:03 AM

Posts: 392 Location: KY | Thanks RiverMan The lower bait is a Topraider for comparison. I plan to keep the top one in action as long as possible. I have changed out the wire with SS and will try to keep the blades as dry when not in use.

Posts: 55 Location: SW Michigan | Those look great! I think the drying/WD40 idea should help. I've clear coated some brass blades & spoons with tarnish & paint problems with clear fingernail polish before. Seemed to help alot. Oh where to begin? I've been lure making/tinkering for a long time, but just got into this Musky thing this winter. Let'see, most recently cut out 4 glider blanks. One ended up in the wood stove ( man those belt sanders cut fast), another one I blew the side out of when drilling out the tail weight (expletives ensued). I noticed the grain was'nt straight but ................. that ones laying out in the woods beside our house, somewhere. Two twitch/cranks. Yep, got the lip slot crooked on one of those, but able to bend the aluminum lip & salvage (earlier lesson). Also my first attempt at foiling. Not pretty, but OK. Two jerk baits. Got the paint too thick over the scale netting. Sand/repaint. Second time was the charm on that one. Also broke a big chunk out of the clear coat while busting out the build up in the eyelets. (More expletives) OWW! Although the foiling on the other one turned out much better. Two lipless cranks, also. Had to re-paint both of those twice before I was happy. Man I need an air brush. The list goes on & on. I try to be philosophical about my failures after fuming for abit. But got a boost the other day when I caught my first musky ever on a lure I made myself. Almost makes it worthwhile. Sure get alot of useful tips on here!

Posts: 351 | Lessons learned? Here's one... When you've just spend an hour and half painting a bait, and you see that one eensy tiny litte dust particle and its sticking up to the point where you can just grab it with your fingers....don't. If you miss the dust booger and touch the bait like I did, a patch of the paint will come off the bait where your finger contacted it...and not a patch of solid color, oh no...a patch of the fades over the side, which cannot be repaired. That was two weeks ago. Even now, if you were to look out my window toward my paint shop at the back of my garage, the cloud of profanity hangs there still.

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | For rust on steel try a product called Extend. It is a spray made by loctite, it reacts with rust and turns it black. You can leave it or paint it. I work at a highway department that uses salt and rust is problem on everything we have.
