Location: oswego, il | What do you think the best cold weather baitcaster is? I am talking fishing in temps below freezing. I seem to break my reels and I am looking for one that will handle it. One thing, no matter what reel is my anti reverse fails. I think I need a reel that has the old mechanical anti reverse that is not instant. Another thing I notice is ice buildup. The levelwinds with the small hole seem to shed more water off the line than does the open wire loop. The eye does not cause the sppol to freeze but does iceup the levelwind bad and I have broken them. The iwre loop gets more water to the spool and feezes the line at times.
My shimanos and garcias can't cut it. I do have an older garcia 6000c that I need a new handle shaft and I have just purchased two penn reels to try hoping they can cope with the colder temps. Anybody else use a reel in sub zero weather with consistant success? Perfect timing as summer is on it's way right? Just want to make sure I am ready for winter when it comes. |

Location: Indiana | I have noticed a similar problem on my Ticas, with the anti reverse failing in cold temps. I too would appreciate any input on good reels, and what makes the reels anti reverse not work in the cold. |

I have the same problem. I was told the problem stems from the heavy grease the factory uses. When it gets cold the grease stiffens up and the anti reverse dog does not fully engage causing it to slip. I was wondering if you cleaned all the grease out and used a little oil instead if that would help correct this problem? It's funny how the anti reverse can slip on a reel on a cold, snowy day in October and you take the reel off, set it aside and use it again in the spring or summer and it works great! |

Location: ne53 | For what it's worth, I use an old Ambassadeur 5500 C (circa early 1970's) in freezing weather. Works great for that purpose and it's kind of fun using some vintage equipment. |
