with circle hooks the fish has to swallow the bait then you pull the hook out and it hooks the mouth area, if you set the hook you will pull the bait out of the fish's mouth and not get a hook set. May work with live bait have to try it to find out.

I don't think that a fish has to swallow the bait in order for a circle hook to work. I think that the fish has to have the bait in its mouth and swimming away in order for them to be effective. Instead of a circle hook on a bucktail why not just use a big single hook, I think a big single hook would work better. Also you can set the hook.

One of the BIGGEST misconceptions about circle hooks is that they have to swallowed first. Think about it, why would the bait & hook have to be swallowed for it to ultimately get hooked in the corner of the mouth an overwhelming majority of the time. You dont see them getting hooked in the throat or stomach. The idea relies heavily on the fish having the entire bait or lion's share thereof firmly in it's mouth AND not employing a traditional heaving hookset.
