| Get a good map of the river you fish and then mark it up as you learn detailes about structure. For example, I have a many-pages-long map of the St. Joseph River, two pages in each clear plastic "holders" that all go into a thin 3-ring binder. These page holders are cheap at office supply outfit.
If the water level drops a lot, run the river and GPS/photo killer spots on spots you would otherwise never find. Then when water levels go back up, you da man. |

Location: Wausau, Wisconsin | Like lakes, food is the number one source of musky location on rivers. It has taken me a lifetime to learn the Wisconsin River and I am sure it will teach me more, everyday for the rest of my life. Rivers offer a diverse and unique lay of structure and the addition of current certainly adds a new dimension.
Take advantage of rivers characteristics. Fish shallower, be more aggressive to getting closer to spots, use bright baits and follow the current to find forage. If you are capable, I will be giving River seminars in Green Bay in April and Milwaukee and Madison in May. My presentation breaks rivers down and offers good honest advice.

| Keep in mind that fish don't always hide behind structure and dash out to ambush prey. Many times you will find them on the front side of structure or current breaks and points. The current hitting the face of anything in the river will create an area void of current or reduced current. Fish the front as well as the rear of anything that changes the current flow.
