More Muskie Fishing -> Muskie Biology -> Fish Perceptions

Subject: Fish Perceptions

I've always wondered what a musky thinks a top water lure is......for instance, what does a musky think a Top Raider is, Dancin' Raider, and a Creeper is? I think muskies believe that bucktails, crankbaits, and jerkbaits are all fish of some kind. Bucktails probably give the perception of a fish running from another predator or just a fish swimming. A crankbait is also the same thing plus with added jerks to a crank makes it look almost injured. And a jerkbait seems like a dying fish that is injured very badly.

What do you guys think a musky perceives top water baits to be?

Thanks,

BrettC

Brett,

Is there a lure out there that truely mimicks a real fish???

Fish respond to all lure because they stimulate senses used for feeding.

You should go to www.esoxresearch.com and read John News "STRIKE FEEDING BEHAVIOR".

Here is the link

Good question dudeski!

Brett and others,

Not to bring the topic down, but one thing that sticks in my mind is how smart WE can perceive these fish to be. In all honesty, I would feel that about the only thing the fish can tell is that the bait is smaller than it...thus, with the bait being in the environment, it is a food source. So...the fish strikes, or at least follows it.

I understand exactly what your saying VMS, however, many times a musky will follow and not hit.....why is this? They must have some sense of whats going on. Plus, there are many fish that are supposedly conditioned, exactly what is a "conditioned fish" and how can they get conditioned if they don't have any intelligence?

Not trying to start an arguement, just interested in opinions,

Thanks,

I believe they percieve them to be young, stray or wounded waterfowl like ducks, loons or possibly other birds and small critters. They have excellent vision and even better at night so it has to be "believable". I love to fish with surface lures especially at night and surface lures seem to present a "Tastey" alternative.I also believe you should always use "scent"....Like they say, If it looks like a duck, smells like a duck, it must be a duck! There's a picture of a musky that had 2 FULL GROWN mallards in it's belly!! They definitely are "predators".

Bret,

Asking "why" is what we are here for, my friend. No one will think you are starting an arguement. This message board is present so we can challenge concepts and beliefs to ensure we retain a continuous learning process. (HA HA HA! (thanks j)

What if a follow isnt a feeding behavior? What if it is a terratorial behavior (like a rutting buck chasing a competitor out of its area)?

Ya see, asking questions like that will ruffle feathers. And that is FUN FUN FUN![;)]

Brett,

Decided to look in a dictionary to get full definition of perceive. They give a few different definitions, and the one I think fits here is this: "To become aware of through the senses." So...where am I going with this? Well...I am thinking that a fish will follow until it detects something about the bait that they have grown accustomed to as being food. What that would be I have no clue. It could be as subtle as a certain sound, vibration, flash, or even possibly the wake of the bait....it's open to debate. If the bait does not have a specific effect to get a triggered hit, the fish will follow...to the boat, and thus possibly see you.

Just a thought.

By the way, no feeling of argument was noticed. Good question you asked!! :-)
