Posts: 3508 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hi Everyone, Possibly looking at making a trip the first week of April and would like to camp. From what I can find, there are two possible places to do so, but I cannot seem to find any rates. Anyone know the general cost of camping? Also, what paper map is best for the lake? Any link to it? Thanks Steve

| It is possible to camp on almost any shoreline of Kinkaid for free. The majority of the lake is in the Shawnee National Forest. Of course, there would not be ammenities on any random place. The link below may be helpfull to find a site w/ amenities. http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/shawnee/recreation/camping/johnson/ Johnny | |||

The shower house may not be open yet but the pit toilets are open year round. Also, since the shower house may not be open yet they may not be charging to stay there. I stayed there last year and only had to use the trailer winch to hold the boat while traveling from campground to boat launch which is only a couple miles away on side roads. Jay

| Standard musky gear is used. 50-80 lb braided line with rod and reel to match. John | |||

Posts: 180 Location: Kinkaid Lake, IL | Camping is permited any where on the lake that is Shawnee forest. You are usually safe if you camp north and west of the main basin. Johnson creek recreation area and the marina both offer primitive camping. There are 3 spots on the lake that have pit toilets that are open year round. Showers???? You fishing in the middle of god's country....jump in the lake if you realy need to wash off. There has already been a good amount of muskie guys camping this spring. In fact I have seen two tents this week already. As far as baits and locations go your best bet is to book a guide. Patterns change daily and Kinkaid has a ton of structure. I have dates open threw Chad Cains Guide Service. Your best bet is to shorten your learning curve and hire someone the 1st day or 2 you are out. Good Luck, Scott Donovan

| I agree with Scott with regard to hiring a guide. Kinkaid can be great fishing, though it can be real tough sometimes too. Getting a guide is the best way to learn to fish the lake. Johnny | |||

Posts: 3508 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | How far of a run is it down to the main portion of the lake from Johnson creek area? That sounds promising for a few day trip. Also, where are the spots on the lake that have pit toilets available? Not sure if I could convince the wife of doing that (assuming the pit toilets have a 360 degree view and no door...) Thanks for the link above..that was very helpful!! Steve
