Posts: 53 | I will be heading to Sabaskong Bay in July 07 for the first time. This is my first trip to LOTW. I have been going to Lac Seul for 14 years and our group wanted to try something different Any words of wisdom? Any suggestions? What should I expect? Thanks for the help everyone. Jason

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | You will have a great trip if the weather treats you right. Topwater, bucktails, spinnerbaits, and cranks will get the job done. Hit all the traditional areas, weeds, rocks, reefs, etc, and try rock walls going into bays, casting to every crack or rubble pile that extends into the water with cranks. Good pattern there, and if it's on you can really spank 'em in water no one else is fishing. Sand drops in the backs of the small bays can be really good too, especially if there's a thin weedline leading in.

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | PLEASE fish a Bobbie. That's a good lure for SB, and catches fish too. Don't forget to post the pictures of the fish you caught!

Posts: 1455 Location: Kronenwetter, WI | Pick up "Muskies on the Shield" by Dick Pearson...Its an enjoyable read and chok full of great info. Entertaining ta-boot! The stories of his 'lost years' on the shield are crazy...we're talking anchoring on a reef overnight...LITERALLY camping on a big fish... Talk about obsessed....

Posts: 2024 | I'd fish the same types of structure as you did on Lac Seul. With 14 years of knowledge on that lake and on the Canadian Shield in general you should have NO problems finding fish. Make sure you pick up Canadian Hydrographic 6214. Thorne Bros. has them I think.

Posts: 2015 | Are you going July O7 or the 7th? July is a transition month. By July 15th I would be concentrationg alot of effort on complex rock structure. If fish are "off" try some secondary structure. Everyone fishes visual structure and for good reason However, I had a great week July 20-27th a couple of summers ago fishin Bulldawgs and DDD's in 6-12 feet of water - when the generally consensus was the fish were off that week.....ya the bucktail bite was off.

I'll be in Nestor Falls July 13th-22nd, maybe I'll see you on the water. Good luck and remember sheer rock walls, I saw the largest Muskie I've ever seen in the water while casting to a non-discript rock wall. (Go figure) Tight Lines..

Been a while for Sabaskong but here goes. One, you are going up not long after Ontario's opener. It has been warm, but look at your map and fish the weeds and logs outside the finger bays. Baits the others stated will work, fire tiger seems to do really well for color. The water is stained so bright is best, in particular orange and chartruese; obviously don't limit to that but a great place to start. For logs, look for ones perpendicular to shore, fallen over into the water. Hit both sides. With as warm as it has been they could be into there summer patterns and classic structure. Islands, humps, saddles etc. are all good. Again use your map and see how the wind that day may be funneled between islands creating current. Sabasong is big so it does depend where in the bay that you will be staying. Push comes to shove there is a narrows about mid way through and large rocks in the middle. The narrows always has current and the rocks hold fish. The narrows on the map are just outside of Sand bay. Not a ton of cabbage around but if you really want to fish some weeds Gohere(gore)bay has good cabbage and seems to hold some fish particularly if wind is or has been blowing into it. Good luck
