Suppose you found a picture of yourself with a fish, on a tackle manufacturer's website...

Now suppose there was a brief story along with that picture, that was completely fabricated by the owner(s) of the tackle company, about how you caught the fish on one of his lures, even though you have never seen them, never used them, and the fish in question was caught before he ever made his first bait...

I realize that sometimes fish pictures are used in not-so-legitimate ways to promote guides, and probably lures too.

But where do you draw the line? Do you call them out on it?

I think I would call thm on it. If for no other reason than to say, "Hey wait a minute.. Glad you liked the picture, but at least put the real story up. If it does not fit what you want it to, don't use it and pull it off.

I would call them on it and then let everyone know about it...just to show what kind of character the bait maker has...I know they want people to see that their baits work but seriously don't fudge it...pretty low if you ask me...

It's funny you say that. Same thing happened to me. I was on a manufactures web site without my knowledge with a fabricated story about me catching the fish on one of his baits. I was 15 at the time and didn't find myself on his site until I was 20. I didn't do anything due to the fact that this guy used to take me fishing all the time but I caught the fish on a reef hawg not his bait. The funny thing is is that we were throwing his baits but they never seemed to produce fish. The other thing is is that the fish was only 34" long and not even worth lieing about. No longer is my picture on the site as it has been completely revamped and they no longer have the editorial section.

Decoy,

Actually it's just my first name and last initial. It's not so much using my picture that bothers me it's this, that I supposedly said:

"I know this isn't a huge monster, but it was my first muskie"

it wasn't...

"So it was special for me"

it had one eye , that's kinda special I guess...

"I just started fishing for muskies last year"

last year, two years, 4 years, who's counting...

"This Spring I was up in Wisconsin fishing the Madison chain"

true enough, I do that EVERY year. But the picture was taken on Halloween...

"We were mainly throwing big rubber baits all day, and then snap, I lost my favorite lure."

I did lose a bait to a backlash, but we got it back. It wasn't my favorite lure. I don't HAVE a favorite lure. In fact it wasn't even my lure.

"I thought if I am going to try a new bait this is the time"

actually, what I thought was: "wow, 50 pound braid really sucks"

"I tied on one of your surface baits while fishing the warm water outlet on lake Monona"

Never thrown his baits. Never even seen one. In fact he wasn't making baits back then. I do remember throwing a squirko over there that day...

"a couple casts later I hooked this beauty"

It was a pretty fish. I was probably casting WHEN IT ATE THE SUCKER we had hanging over the side of the boat.

"and after a few minutes of chaos I landed my first ever muskie, and a tiger at that"

the fish fought like.... like a wet sock. I wondered if I had killed it when I set the hook because it just kinda sat there.

If the guy would have called me and said "hey, if I give you a couple lures will 'ya throw 'em and send me a picture of whatever you catch" I'd have kept one on a rod all season. But here I stumble on his website and find my picture and a bogus story, with a bunch of other stories that are probably BS...

Definitely call him on it. While there's some chance its a communication mistake or mix up, there's probably a better chance he is misrepresenting his lure in an effort to sell it to unsuspecting Muskie fishermen. You can't do nothing, canyou? I think many of us rely on people on these message boards (muskie brothers, if you will) to help police the sport in many ways. This would be one of them. Good luck. Hopefully, its just a misunderstanding, but it doesn't look that way.
