Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> What would you do?

Subject: What would you do?

I've been looking to upgrade my fishing platform, and am currently contemplating two options. I'd like to take a poll to see what the popular vote would be.....

Option #1: NEW 2002 Crestliner Fishawk 1750 w/Yamaha 115 Four Stroke

Option #2: USED 1998 Stratos 219 w/2000 150 Johnson FICHT

Both boats comparably equipped and almost equal price tag. Basically this is a new/used or glass/aluminum debate... but specific to me.

Which boat would you buy and WHY? Thanks!

I would go with the new boat for sure, I do fish and like aluminum boats better and you get a new engine and a 4 stroke on top of it thats another plus. Now think that you will have a warranty with the new boat as well. I just can't see where I would even think about it once. Just the gas you will save in the first year with the Crestliner can pay for a lot of new lures. []

Given the choice, glass vs aluminum wouldn`t even enter the equation. I`d go for new anytime. Beaver

I fish out of the 2001 Fishhawk with an 80 yammie four stroke. You'll definitely be happy with that outfit. Warranty and new motor, can't go wrong.

My family and I have a 2001 Crestliner Tournament Series 182 with a 2001 Yamaha 115 hp four stroke. It is a great boat with a rod locker that can hold up to around six seven foot rods. Crestliner hulls are all welded, and not riveted, like Lund boats. The warranty on the hull lasts 20 years, and 3 years from bow-to-stern. The Yamaha 115 hp four stroke is so quiet at idle speeds that you will not even know it is running. It has yet to not start on the first turn of the key (knock on wood). The fumes are at a bare minimum, and best of all, it barely uses any gas. Overall, a great boat with one of the best motors out there right now.

I would buy the Crestliner, even though I am a 'fiberglass' man. The reasons:
Stratos no longer makes the 219, it is a dino, but a nice one

The Johnson Ficht is no longer made, either, and no one really has a handle on what the new Bombardier 150 low emmission motors will even be called, so another dino, in my humble opinion, not so nice a one.

The Crestliner is Muskie Angler friendly, and is a well built rig as aluminum goes. The 219 would go right by the Crestliner with you much drier in really rough stuff, but how often will you be out in 4-5 foot seas?

Crestliner has a great resale, and Erica Kalkofen works for them with their Pro Team.

I really like the room in the Crestliner Fishhawk, have fished out of one a number of times. The new boat would be my choice.

jlong,

If those are your two choices I would choose the Crestliner for the same reasons as mentioned earlier.

My neighbor has a Fishhawk, he seems very happy with it. I have been in it once (just for a ride no fishing) and it was fine under "normal" water conditions. It appears to be laid out fairly well although he has already had two hatch covers warp on him (which they promptly covered under warranty).

All I can tell you is that he thought his rig was the "Cats A**" until I brought my Esox Deep V home.....[:praise:]
Gotta sneak'n hunch his next rig will be a Tuffy......

If you want an aluminum boat I think Crestliner is a good choice. Good luck with your decision, if your ever in the Eau Claire/Rice Lake area give me a call I'll be glad to take you out in my Esox-V.

That crestliner is on my shortlist for my next boat. I like the layout with the open floor plan. Great fit and finish. Not big on yamahas only because they are not made here but then again no four strokes are.

Wow, looks like new/aluminum/and four stroke wins the vote so far. I also like the convenience of trading in my old boat... so it looks like I will favor going with NEW[:)] .

If I'm going to go with the fishawk... I'll throw in another question for you guys. Would there be any benefit to going with the new 1850 and a 150HP outboard over a 1750 with the 115 Four Stroke? Will both boats perform equally as well in 4 footers?

Thanks guys, I'm getting excited about the new boat prospective!!!!!

1850 is worth every penny....

Jason, the Crestliner Tournament Series 182 with the Yammy 115 hp four stroke tops out around 40-42 mph with a 3-blade aluminum prop and two people with all of their gear. You could get the 1850 with the four stroke and still top out at a pretty respectable speed. Hope this helps.

Just sold my boat today... leaving me w/ a small one for the river which I fish most of the time if I ever have time again! Crestliner dealer here on the big pond.
*what screws come loose on these things that everyone keeps talking about? Used to have a Tracker Pro V 17 + no loose screw probs.....perhaps they could increase sales by offering a cordless screwdriver.... any help? Gracias...[:sun:]
