Posts: 227 Location: Southeast Wisconsin | Hi, Whats the major difference between the evinrude 225 e-tech and HO? I've already gathered that the E tech is better on gas, but after that what sets the 2 motors apart? Also, how much more would a 225 e-tech cost vs a 225 HO (roughly)?? Thanks!! | ||

Posts: 199 Location: Sandusky, OH | Ben, I assume you are comparing current motors, the standard 225 Etec and the 225 Etec HO. The major difference between the two is in the lower unit, where the HO model has a sport-type, high speed gearcase. The HO is also supposed to be at the high end of the allowable horsepower for 225s (Motors are allowed a +/-10% range for labelled horsepower). That puts the HO at around 247-248 HP, a real advantage for boats with a max HP rating of 225. In a related note, I was speaking to the local Evinrude dealer/repairman last week, and he said that for boats with high enough HP ratings, he always recommends the 250 over the 225 HO; says the lower units are 'bulletproof'. If you are asking about the 225 Etec vs the 225 Ficht HO, I know far less, other than it is older, more complex technology in the Ficht. Eric | ||

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | There is a difference between the pre-Bombardier Ficht and the E Tech. The Ficht was built by now defunct OMC, and E Tec by Bombardier. | ||

Posts: 144 | Bombardier doesn't use the Ficht name. Their non Etech motors are just called "Direct Injected". If you post this question in the evinrude forum at bass boat central they can give you more info. | ||

Posts: 199 Location: Sandusky, OH | Ben, The same things that separate the HO from the standard in the Etecs apply to the Ficht versions. I would think the Etec would be a 'better' motor, but the few guys I know that have run Ficht motors seem to like them. Best advise anyone can give is to have a service tech hook it up to the computer for a diagnostic and print out the % of time at each RPM. Give you a better idea of how its been run. Posts: 126 | Avoid the direct inject! A friend bought one, took it to the water and spun the prop first thing. Got it back to the ramp, on the trailer and it is leaking oil. Took it to the dealer, he checked it out and said he couln't find anything wrong. Talked to Evinrude, they told him and I quote "it's supposed to do that" no kidding. The thing is still under warranty, spitting oil, and no one will fix it. Bad deal. | ||

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | First, the prop hub spinning out has absolutely nothing to do with the motor design. Second, Bombardier isn't building the older style ficht motors anymore, I was in the factory for a tour last week and all that is on the line is the new E Tec. Third, there is no 'oil' other than the 2 cycle oil in the powerhead of that motor(which is the issue at question here), so where in the world would oil be 'leaking' from unless you are talking the lower unit, in which case there is NO reason for leaking and the outboard needs to get looked at again. | ||

Posts: 126 | Steve, The prop may have been a coincedence but it came on the boat from the factory. The oil in question was leaking from somewhere inside the motor down onto the back outside part of the motor below the cowling. It wasn't the lower unit. He has had it to two different Evinrude dealers and both can't tell him what is wrong or fix it. ?????? | ||

Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | Find a better mechanic! I've found out the hard way that just because a joint is "certified" doesn't mean they can change a spark plug. I had to bring my Opti to 3 different dealers before I found one that knows what the hell they're doing. | ||
