Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I am looking for a few more reels to add to my arsonal. I would like to have a few work horse reels for baits like the Double X and Triple X bucktails. Also for working Mag Dawgs and Pounders on the pond.
Whats your work horse reel and whats the ratio? |

| Luna 300s now handle those chores for me
Before that it was the c3 7000 which I still use as well |

Location: Yahara River Chain | Abu 700 series hands down. I prefer the 7001LH as its a true right handed reel. The crank is on the same side as your spinning reel. It also allow quicker & harder hooksets then your whimpy arm. |

| lots of discussion on this topic lately, most seems to suggest using large-spool reels with low gear ratios such as the Penn 975 or Abu 7000iCS Pro Rocket.

| click on those threads Lambeau posted above...I love the Penn 975, my workhorse for 2+ seasons...countless hours of use...$250 retail but you can usually snag them on ebay for less.
4.5 to 1. makes reeling in hard pulling baits alot easier. |

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Just to throw an outlier in here: the Okuma IDx-400LX. I had a chance to use one about a month ago and was really impressed with the performace. Smooth casting and easy retrieves, even on the large #10 blades becoming so popular these days which is possible with the 5.1:1 gear ratio. Yes, there are more established workhorse reels out there, but for $109 MSRP it's a deal thats hard to beat. Buy two, and you're still below a number of the other options where you would be if you buy just one reel. And, not to knock other reels out there, but much below a 5.1:1 gear ratio, and you've got a reel that you might be only using for a one-dimensional application.

| IMO, you need two different reels for those two presentations
Double and Triple X I use the 7000C3. The Luna is nice, but not quite powerful enough for me when I'm cranking those blades.
Dawgs and Pounders, I'd go with the 6500CL, 7000CL, or 7000iHSN

| Abu Records are ok..but will fatigue you after a long day more so than something with lower gear ratio on big bucktails/hard pulling baits...the best 1-2 punch for hard pulling baits, is a big spool with lots of line pick up per crank and a lower gear ratio...in essence you are picking up more line with less effort with these types of reels...personally 5.0 and up to 1 is too fast.
go with a big spool and lower gear ratio for the heavy pulling stuff...IMO.
Penn 975, or Abu 7000ics Pro Rocket get the nod with the new Tekota's being something that could be another great option at 4.2 to 1.
