| 10" Jakes, D Raider, 5 and 8" Tuff Shads, Perchbaits and 10" Believers. I've taken > 90% of my fish using those baits.
I like the straight vs jointed, except for the Believers. Tick...Tick...Tick...BAM!!!!!!!! Brighter in the summer, more naturals in the spring and fall.
Nothings absolute, just a starting point and let the fish tell you what they want. |

Location: oswego, il | To put this to 5 baits is about impossible not knowing what depths you want to run, how you want to troll and the areas you want to troll in. You can troll just about anything, knowing specifics would help out lure choice tremendously. |

Location: Northern IL | Your question is "What lures to buy"... I asked a very similar question a few years back and was told by Terry O'Malley, "before you spend a penny on a single bait, spend your 1st $20 bucks on educating yourself!" He went on to say "you can follow the crowd and catch some fish, or you can catapult your success with knowledge and catch a 100+ muskies next year from the fox chain. Needless to say I was listening.
Fishing tackle has one purpose. To "find" fish and to catch them. The correct tools enables us to catch more and bigger fish. After you learn a few basics your choice of baits will come from a totally different thinking. In time you will no longer give credit or be "SOLD" of any catch to such meaningless things as color, or action ect, but learn that it is the depth of the lure, (or bait) and speed in which it travels that triggers the strike.
Once a fisherman learns how to use the correct tools (baits), he will learn to map or find the bottom features that hold the fish. The right tool will tell the fisherman the place to do productive casting. With each fishing outing the fisherman gets better, learns more and turns new knowledge into consistent fish catches. With the wrong lures the time it takes to accomplish this is greatly extended.
12 years ago I met Terry, since then my 4 boys and I have fished more than 100+ different waters, (muskie waters about 1/2 of that time) we have landed more than 1200 muskies, thousands of pike, bass, walleyes, trout ect. I'm so glad we listened!

Love Grandmas and Jakes, as well as Believers too. Also like trolling with Cowgirls if the time is right. #1 though, get your hands on a Musky Mikes Trolling Secrets book!!! This will help the most determining what baits and how much linke you should be using. That book may help you catch a big muskie as much or more than the lures!

I believe lures are tools and with the correct tools you will catch more fish quicker than if you didn't have the best tools. Every lake has it's best lures and I believe that if someone takes everyones top 5 and starts with the best of all the best they will have a good starting 5. Learning the water and how to approach it is another topic.
Learning the speed and depth to run the bait is huge. |
