Posts: 880 Location: New Berlin,Wisconsin,53151 | I'm just wondering how to get a rule changed. Right now I could be fishing Pewaukee in a boat with suckers and the law states "SEASON's CLOSED". Now Here's my question, How do you get this regulation changed? Why can't there be an open season until the you can't launch anymore? I'm talking what, a catch and release only, nothing that were not used to anyways. Think of the economic value that this would give the bait stores. Smokies could be open to sell suckers, the County could still be getting launch fees, we all wou;d be buying more gas, If this "Gobal Warming" continues then this regulation has to change. There's power in numbers, is anyone out there thinking the same as me or did I put to much brandy in my eggnog? Netman

| I believe there is some effort by members of the Capital City Muskies Inc to try and get this put on the hearings at the Cons. Congress or something like that...trying to get maybe a longer season for south of hiway 10 until Dec 15 or 30th I think... | |||

Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | Probably wont be any changes made as the DNR is protecting them as the fish build up for the spawn after ice out.

Posts: 313 Location: On your favorite spot | Might want to look at Minnesota - next year there will be a closed season starting Dec 1st. I'm not sure what the rationale is for this yet and it's not an issue for me but you may be able to find your answers there.

Posts: 82 Location: Owatonna,MN | The season closing in Dec. is because there are WAY to many big muskies being tossed on the ice. It was going to be either the 1st or the 15th, not because some quit fishing in September.

Posts: 2112 Location: The Sportsman, home, or out on the water | anyone who subscribes to the theory of global warming has never really spent much time in wisconsin. Less snow? yes. I agree. cold? PLENTY! warm snaps, sure. we have been coming out of an ice age for, ummmmmm, i dunno, 1 million years now! Edited by muskynightmare 12/26/2006 11:28 PM

![]() Posts: 412 Location: Waukesha, WI | Netman, I was thinking along the same line as you. Not knowing if there is a rhyme or reason, I began wondering if it is to protect for spawn, why not IL? How far to IL waters from MKE. Then I go back to being concerned about boat winterizing. I've got a few baits from Beav that I didn't get a chance to try out before the season closed, and it is killin' me! Mike

Posts: 956 Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | Year round open season in Illinois does not affect the spawn according to the DNR. They claim that there is no natural spawning occuring within the state. All populations are supported 100% by stocking. Apparently the lakes in Ill lack satisfactory spawning areas. Personally I find this hard to believe. At least on the "100%" part. I believe that somewhere on some of the lakes there is at least some successful natural reproduction. Karl

Posts: 2893 Location: Yahara River Chain | There will be a question on the April Conservation Congress Hearings to have the season remain open until the end of the year south of HWY 10. It is being put forth by Madison area DNR Fisheries Manager, Scot Stewart and it endorsed by the Capital City Chapter of Muskies, Inc. So get off the couch and support the question (or not), but make yourself heard.

Location: The Yahara Chain | Just to clarify this a little bit. I believe that the prolonged season would only be if there is open water. No muskie fishing if the lakes are iced over. CPainter, you out there??

Posts: 2893 Location: Yahara River Chain | If you are taking about the question put forth by Scot Stewart, I'm real sure that it doesn't matter if there is ice or not. An open season means open, ice or not ice.

Location: The Yahara Chain | Gerard it was my understanding that there is something in the proposal about not being able to target muskies thru the ice. Cory??? weren't you involved in this.

Posts: 3242 Location: Racine, Wi | Bruce, if you and Sanks REALLY need to get out I have some new gift certificates I'm really wanting to throw. Oh wait, I have to get something with the gift certificates first they're telling me. Oh well. I guess I can't have everything done for me. Edited by tuffy1 12/27/2006 8:24 AM

Posts: 2893 Location: Yahara River Chain | FYI - 2007 DNR Spring Hearings & Annual Conservation Congress County Meeting Notice: Traditionally, the Spring Hearings have been held on the 2nd Monday in April. However, due to unforeseen legislative changes which went into effect in June of this year, we are unable to hold the Spring Hearings on the 2nd Monday in April in 2007. The State Elections Board has informed counties that they are required to secure election results for a specified period of time following any general or primary election. In 2007 the primary election will take place on April 3rd. What this means for the Department and the Conservation Congress is that we will not have access to the voting equipment used for tabulation of the results of the hearing until this time has expired. Thus, for 2007 the Spring Hearing date will be Monday, April 16th rather than of Monday, April 9th. We apologize for any confusion this may cause, but feel that this is the appropriate course of action to assure that the automated ballot system put in place statewide in 2006 is again utilized in 2007.

Posts: 1245 Location: Madtown, WI | This is right from the WI muskie Committee meeting minutes. If you want to get up to date info from the muskie committee this web page is pretty helpful. http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/water/fhp/fish/musky/muskymanteam.ht... "4. Extended Fall Fishing season - Rule Change – Scot Stewart presented a proposal to extend the open season for muskellunge south of U.S. Highway 10 until later in the fall. After discussion, along with input that Scot had obtained from Law Enforcement, the committee recommended the proposal be forwarded with a specific ending date (rather than “during open water” or “before ice-up). It was felt that by extending the open season through December 31 (rather than November 30), it would keep enforcement simple and there is s very small chance of ice fishing for muskellunge. That chance already exists in some years throughout the state with the current season." Just think if we went with "ice up" how confusing that would be this year!!!!! We have ice, then we don't. Posts: 2865 Location: Brookfield, WI | I had an appointment at a house on the north end of Okauchee today, and I have to admit, I think the Lake itself would have been happy if there were a couple of musky guys out there hanging some suckers and chucking a few baits. I had to drive basically all the way around the lake after the appointment, and it looked awfully forlorn and lonesome. Kevin Go 'Skins, Go Vikings
