Posts: 3482 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | I have heard of people doing this to their grandma/jake style baits. What does it do to the action of the bait? Also, what would squaring off the lip do? Thanks Steve

It makes the bait easier to twitch. I wouldn't recommend doing it to a bait that you want for trolling as it doesn't have the same wobble. I've never squared one off so I can't comment on that.

Posts: 3482 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Naw...I am planning on doing it to a couple 6 inch grandmas. Love those babies in the spring. maybe do it to a 9 incher, but I just bought it so it is not an original. Thanks for the info!! Steve

Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | Be careful on which baits you do it to. I've found that it only works on 10" baits (jakes and slammers). I tried it on 8" jakes and slammers and it just ruined them.

Posts: 1937 Location: Black Creek, WI | I'm with Treats on this one. DickP showed me that "trick" several years ago and my first few attempts on 8 inch Jakes were extreme failures. Thus, I never tried it on the larger 10 inchers (too risky of an experiment, in my opinion).

Posts: 351 | Can anyone post a picture of a bait on which this modification has been successfully applied? I build baits and I'd like to try building a few with that modification and then try variations of it.

Posts: 159 | It always worked for me. I started doing it to M-9's and originals. I screwed them up but the lips are easy enough to make. But the Jakes and the New Grandmas seem to work better. It cost me a few lures in the beginning but the rewards are worth it to me now. Posts: 781 Location: Ames, Iowa | I did this to a 6 inch Jake a few years ago after reading about it here. The Jake doesn't have the tight wobble or the depth it had before, and sorta rolls a bit on the twitch without rolling completely over. And yeah, it stays shallow. Used a scroll saw and a file. Posts: 479 Location: Eden Prairie & Pine Island | California M, Score the lip slightly with a file or small saw blade where you want to bend it, then heat it up there with a candle or mini torch and it will bend...be careful though, too much scoring or too much heat will make it weak and ruin it. Good luck. G

Posts: 1937 Location: Black Creek, WI | The above photo is NOT what I consider "v-ing" the lip. The trick showed to me by DickP was basically cutting or shaving the sides of the lip. When viewing the lip from the front the standard lip looks like a "U" and after the mod it looks like a "V". And... when bending the lip up as depicted in the above photo... my Jakes ran deeper and with less "action" when twitched. What's up with that????
