Posts: 786 Location: Minnesota | I have but, not on fishing lures on cosmetics. lol I had to make muskie lures to bring my man status back up to even! What do you need to know? I have my UCC kit right next to me. In short it cost me $750 to sign up to get 10 UPC codes and I pay $150 each year to keep my membership. Once my labels run out I will not subscribe again. Cabelas and Bass Pro have their own bar code system I think. If you do not add one to your package you woudl still want to leave a small area on the back so one could add a sticker UPC label if needed. Very expensive for small sales/year... James

Posts: 786 Location: Minnesota | Most do not require it. I worked at WalMart for a while and we had our own bar code gun with pricing. I have yet ot get ahold of the Cabelas buying rep but when I do I planned on asking her that very question. If/when I find out I will post back to you. I have not downloaded them yet but, I took some pics of the muskie lures during my last trip to Cabelas to view the various packaging and if I see anything in them I will cut/paste it here as well. Hope that helps! James

Posts: 140 | John, I believe I got mine for $89. I ordered them from SimplyBarcodes.net and they sent decent resolution files as an email attachment or high res were available for a nominal fee. I still have 2 remaining if you want them. Merry Christmas, Mike

Posts: 786 Location: Minnesota | LOL! Sorry for the misdirection. I went to the source and it looks like I paid a little too much! Live and learn. Thanks Mike for the post. I think I will look into this a little more as I need more labels but don't need to waste money like I am...

Posts: 53 | Interesting thread. I thought I would add something rearding Bass Pro Shops. A close friend markets jigs online, and to some smaller shops. They aquired alot of hype last ice season, and Bass Pro in Toronto was interested in carrying them. They told my friend that he needed to take care of the UPC code before they could carry the products. He looked into it, and if he wanted 1 code per color, it would have been upwards of $35,000 USD. Needless to say, Bass Pro doesn't carry his jigs....yet. Word of mouth can do wonders! Thanks for the link above. I will forward this to him. Mike

Posts: 786 Location: Minnesota | $35k! YIKES! I do remember when I went though my questions with UCC they did ask what my sales woudl be/year. I assume this was to calculate the cost of my bar codes. http://www.gs1us.org/

Posts: 786 Location: Minnesota | Just called the UCC (Now GS1) who ownes the "bar code/UPC" system and asked some questions. I did ask about the online selling of bar codes and asked what that was about. The customer service rep informed me that if I were to buy one of those I woud be just fine however, my product woudl be listed under that companies name. Hence you are renting the bar code from that online company. She sadi taht is fine for some products and retailers but, some retailers require that your UPC symbol is obatianed and owned by your company. I guess that woudl be a question for Bass Pro or Cabelas, etc... The fee is still a minimum of $750 start-up and that gives you 100 available SKUs (UPC symboles or bar codes) unique to your products. Also required is a $150/year fee to keep active. I guess this would be an opportunity for some here to buy 100 bar codes and sell them... Anyone want a bar code meant for cosmetics! lol The cosmetic muskie lure. I hope this helps. Here is the number: (937) 435-3870 http://www.gs1us.org/ For the guy sellng jigs to Bass Pro, tell him to estimate the gross revenues to be under $20k. I did ask if the UCC checks up on revenues on they do not! If you tell them $200k you will pay more for hte use of the UPC bar codes. Hope this helps, James
