Not entirely true. You do need a license if you're guiding the waters of Lake Superior as I understand it. |

Location: Muskegon Michigan | All waters connecting to the Great lakes considered navigable by the army corp. engineers require Us coast guard issued Captains license. Commonly called a 6 pack because it allows for 6 passengers for hire per trip. Michigan Guides need an inland waters pilots license with boat inspection to take passengers for hire on non navigable lakes and rivers. Get caught guiding in Michigan without a license first offence 500 dollar fine second they take your boat. Kingfisher

| Yep, be sure you have a captain's license if you are guiding on the "Federal" waters of the United States. There is difference between Federal Waters and Navigable waters. Most waters are Navigable, but many less are considered "Federal" and navigable for captain license purposes. If you are confused on which waters require a captain's license, you are in good company. A year or two back there was a Coast Guard worker at one of the Federal captain licensing centers who was giving out inaccurate information on which U.S. waters needed a captain's license and which ones did not.
As a general rule, if a waterway crosses state lines, or at one time was (or is) used for commercial shipping, you probably need a U.S. Coast Guard issued captain's license in addition to a possible state guide license. - jim |

| Pretty sure the 6-Pack is a Lite version of the Captians license. You can guide on a body of water like Bago, but not on Green Bay, with the 6-Pack. I can find out. I intend to take the Captains Course this next spring.

Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | Here in Indiana we must do the following:
1. Pay $100.00 for guide license
2. Get an "on the water" boat inspection, cost $65 I believe
3. Get an "off the water" boat inspection, cost $65 I believe
4. Send in monthly reports to the DNR, days fished, fish caught, hours fished, number of people, etc...
I also carry commerical insurance, but the state does no require that yet. |

| The way it used to be is if you get the regular license you can guide on Bago, Green Bay, etc. The six-pack license just limits the number of people, it does not limit where you can fish. A 'limited" captain's license does however limit the waters you can fish on, that is if "limited" licenses are still available, and I think they are. I carry a limited Master captains license, I can carry 49 passengers with two crew, but I am limited to certain inland waters in Wisconsin. - jim |

the state of Indiana dose require Commicerial guide insurance and it must be worth at least 80 thousand per person in the boat. I heard they are going to increase it to a million dollars total soon. the DNR inspector always checks my policy every year.

Location: Muskegon Michigan | The term Navigable waters refers to any water that has been termed Navigable by the United states Army Corp of engineers. In Michigan even the Muskegon River is Navigable all the way to M-37 AND the Grand river all the way to Grand Rapids. All drowned river mouths like Muskegon Lake and White lake require the coast guard license. One way to know ,is if the lake has the red and green navigation bouys you can bet it has been termed navigable. The best way to get all the info is to write the United states Coast guard in Toledo Ohio. or call there and they will send you a list. Kingfisher |

| All navigatable waters that return to Sea!All of the Great Lakes and connecting Rivers fall under U.S. Coast Guard Reg's and a Merchant Marine Officers Licencing is needed,along with CPR,Standard First Aid and a Drug Testing Consortium(Random Drug Testing Program).In NY State you need a Guide License to operate on inland waters as well,10 hour class and $35.But also in NY State you must have 1 Million Liability Insurance per person that you take out for hire!
