Hi guys,

what do you think of the st croix legend tournament musky rods? are they worth the money
I would like to make a custom jerkbait rod for small jerkbaits, i have a tournament bass rod and i really like the curve of the rod. lots of backbone but a forgiving rod tip.

Thanks for your time,

Johnny

Personally I think they are overpriced and not worth the money....I think they want 340.00 for the 8'6''....I or anyone for that matter could get a Custom Diamondback for that price or even alot less Diamondbacks are the best blanks out there right now..I think Professional Edge rods are like 240.00 up to 9'in length plus you get custom colored thread, handle length ,cork and rod length .... just my 2 cents.

I've had Thornes make me some customs out of these blanks the last 2 years. I made an 8'2" in the med (2005)and an 8'6" on the X Heavy(2006). I have to disagree with the other poster and say that they're nicer then Diamondback's. Are they worth the money, no. But neither are Diamondbacks and most of the other rods and reels out there.

One note, I had Thornes use the TI guides on mine. I don't know how big a difference it makes, but they're sweet rods. The big thing is to have a rod custom made on this blank as St.Croix still can't figure out that when you have a rod over 7'6" you need a handle bigger then 12".

I would agree that the Tournaments are better than Diamondbacks. Also I agree that both are overpriced.

Treats and MuskyJay why do you like the tournaments better?

My reasoning is that I have owned more than one of each and it is just a nicer rod. My Tournaments are Thornes Customs. I know people who don't like the factory ones as much as the customs.

Are they to expensive? They both have one thing in common.......American Made.

The tournament is a really nice blank. St Croix came out with an entire line of Musky blanks in the tournament this year.
7-3 MH, 8-0 MH, 7-9 H, 7-6 XH and 8-6 XH.

I think that the St.Croix rods are a bit more sensitive, seem to weigh less and have a better action. I can cast mine all day and not feel it.

I pretty much run my two TC rods about 90% of the time now. There's only a few baits in my boat that they don't work well with.

I am with Treats and Jay on this. i have a couple of Thornebros customs in both blanks. The StCroix is lighter and ,I believe has a nicer feel to it. Use the Ti guides, simply the lightest rods I own!

Which ones do you all own that you like? Hopefully I'll get a chance to look at them at the shows this winter so I can order a couple.

I had a custom built by Thornes last season. They used the 8' blank(heavy swim bait) in the bass series and extended it to 9'. I also chose the titanium SiC guides for the lack of weight as well as durability. This rod threw everything from a Mag Dawg/XXX to small 1oz. baits. Jody Dahms 50# was caught on this rod. Steve

Do they seem to be as strong (robust) as the premier and avid ranges? I was a bit apprehensive about buying an avid in the first place as my rods get put in and out of my car all the time and bounce around in the boat, but so far the avids have remained in one piece. Higher modulus rods are generally more brittle so have St Croix made them as durable as the other ranges?

I haven't had a problem with mine. I've got 2 seasons on one and 1 on the other. I put about 90% of my hours on these rods and they haven't skipped a beat. I also use them right to the end of the season and haven't had an issue.

I had the chance to talk to one of the St Croix guys at the Blaine show this winter. He grabbed the tip of the XHeavy and gave me the butt section. He told me to pull as hard as I could and I couldn't break it. He said that they're stronger then their other ones and I don't doubt it.

The extra heavy bass swim bait series. They are rated to 1-8 ounces I believe.
