Sorry if this is in the wrong section. Ive got a couple gliders that ive never fished before and frankly, i have no idea how to. Ive got some smuttly dogs and a h20 xglide. Whats the retreive with these guys is it jerk pause reel or what?

This is what I do...everyone seems to have their own way of working a glider. I would suggest you practice several casts with the bait close to you so that you can see what it's doing.

Keep the rod tip near the water...low. As you retrieve the lure you want to get a rythmic bump of the rod tip and turn of the reel handle which will send the lure darting one way and then when bump/reel again and it will go the other way. You will generally only need to bump the rod gently to get the lure to dart one direction. The rod tip might move about 10 inches...it's not a huge yank of the rod, just a gentle bump. You will end up with a rythm of bump/reel, bump...bump, bump...pause....bump,bump, bump, etc.

Here is pool clip of one of my gliders to give you an idea of what it might look like in the water.

Every glider is differant. Some only require moving the rod an inch, some over a foot. Some need a tight line and some need slack in the line. They all take a few casts to figure out.

Zach has a good point, you will find that some gliders you can bump/reel quite agressively and they will respond in a good way while others require a much slower and more gentle approach with the rod/reel to get them swimming in a good way.

Find a spot where you can easily see the lure and practice some...it takes a bit of coordination but it's not difficult.

Trick pony - On the X glide it takes small taps and can be done with just the reel. It does not like slack line either. Once you get used to it it can be worked very fast, 4 to 5 taps than a pause (no slack line) then do it again. When worked fast it goes all over, not a constant back forth. Go to my website and look at the video and any questions send me an email. Do not have any Smuttly dogs but heard they are a good bait.
