I have just bought an Abu Garcia 6500C3 reel that has a push button instead of a thumbar on it. For you guys that have these push button type reels, how hard is it (maneuvering your hands to let out line, thumb the fish) when a fish strikes on the figure 8. I know when using a thumbar type reel you dont have to adjust any because the button and the spool of line is right there whereas the push button is over on the side causing one to press that while trying to give the fish line(hopefully not giving the fish slack) and holding on to the rod properly. Thanks for any info!

Its pretty tough for me. Any tension on the line whatsoever makes it extremely hard to go to free spool. I still havent found a good way to go to free spool upon entering the figure 8.

I nearly lost a fish that was pulling and I couldn't get that button engaged. In the middle of the fight I just had a hard time hitting the button, riding the spool forward, and repeating everytime the fish made a run. I had three 6500 C3s when I went to Canada last year and one St. Croix Avid 300. Came back from Canada and sold the 6500s and wouldn't look back.

Easier than heck for me. Of course, I have the rod in my right hand at all times. I also find myself pushing the thumbar with my left thumb and leaving my right thumb on the spool rather than using my right thumb.

Get yourself a 6501C3 and you'll also have an easier time of it.

I haven't had that much of a problem.. ..All you have to do is put you thumb on the spool and pull back to take a little tension off, click and go for the ride....

Muskie nut has the right answer! Swapping hands makes everything more awkward, except the number of reels you have to choose from!

I don't think the Ambassadeur push-button design lends itself well to entering freespool with the line under tension (fish on). You really have to jam that button to make it happen, if at all. That's why I like to right away go into freespool at the L-turn and thumb the fig-8. Farther out from the boat I just rely more on the drag.

But, I like Magruter's idea of using the thumb to release tension enough to get the button pushed (if I understood his post).

I'm with Tim Kelly and muskie! nut that 6501s make things less awkward (if you're a 'right hander'). The left vs. right thing has been argued here before. Read http://www.dlst.co.uk/amb01/01lr.html also. Either way, it just takes some practice, I think.

PS: Take the silly thumb rest off your Ambassadeurs, too. Much easier to thumb the spool when you want/need to.
