Posts: 122 | On September 23–24, the Wisconsin Muskie Tour (WMT) will be offering the largest purse in the history of muskie fishing tournaments during the Invitational Championship on the Eagle River Chain of Lakes in Eagle River, Wisconsin. After competing during the eighteen qualifying-tournament regular season, the top sixty-six muskie teams in the world will be fishing in the WMT’s Invitational Championship to earn the title of the 2006 Wisconsin Muskie Tour Champion. Even though the WMT’s Invitational Championship has grown in years to be a very prestigious muskie tournament, there is increased interest (more than previous years) in the 2006 final tournament. The WMT introduced the Muskie Grand Slam™, which will pay out a $100,000.00 cash bonus to the team who captures all four “legs” of the Grand Slam™. The team of Phil Schweik and Pete Hilman will be entering into the WMT’s Invitational Championship with two legs of the Grand Slam™. The team won a one-day qualifier on Lake Monona on May 13th and recently won a two-day qualifying tournament on Lake Dubay, held on September 9 – 10. If the team should capture the Muskie Grand Slam™, they will be taking home over $200,000.00 in cash and prizes from the Championship. (This does not include their regular season earnings) Prior to August 26th, Phil Schweik and Pete Hilman were looking as though capturing the Lapp Trophy (for Team of the Year -overall-points winner) was out of their reach. The team was trailing behind several teams by at least 163.75 points. The leaders had 460.0 points prior to the Dubay tournament, but Schweik and Hilman closed the gap by just a two fish margin, with 374.25 points and third place overall. Winning the Muskie Grand Slam™ could bring the team, in addition to the $200,000.00 championship earnings, a ten-year paid tour exemption, potentially earning the duo an estimated 4.7 million dollars over the next ten years. The remaining legs of the Muskie Grand Slam™ are winning the Invitational Championship and the Lapp Trophy (Team of the Year). Although Schweik and Hilman have their eye on the Muskie Grand Slam™ prize, there are sixty-five other top professional teams who are not willing to concede anything to Phil and Pete. All of the teams competing in the Invitational Championship have worked very hard to get to this point, and every angler will have to adjust to the conditions. The team, who is most adaptable to the conditions come tournament day, will be the team who earns the bragging rights to the title of 2006 WMT Invitational Champions. The Championship fishing hours are from 6:30am – 4:30pm on Saturday, September 23rd and from 6:30am – 12:30pm on Sunday, September 24th. The ease-out location (starting point) for all teams will be at the Hiawatha Supper Club and Motor Lodge on both Saturday and Sunday. Additional registration stations are at the Eagle River Inn and Chanticleer Inn. The general public is welcome to join in the festivities, with an opportunity to meet and talk to tournament pro’s at Heckel’s Marina on Thursday, September 21, 2006 from noon – 8:00pm. The fishermen and women will also be at Heckel’s on Friday, September 22 from 5:00pm – 8:00pm and Saturday, September 23 after tournament hours. The awards ceremony will be held at Heckel’s Marina on Sunday, September 24 at 2:00pm. The final prize awarded for the 2006 season will be a drawing for a new $35,000.00 Ranger boat, equipped with a 150hp Mercury Optimax motor and a MinnKota trolling motor. All 2006 participants received a ticket for the boat drawing at every tournament they had entered, increasing the chances of winning for many teams who participated in more than one tournament. The winner must attend the awards ceremony in order to win. Sponsors of the WMT’s 2006 season are: Eagle River Chamber of Commerce, Heckel’s Marina, Ranger Boats, Minn Kota, MidWest Outdoors, Fittante Taxidermy, G Loomis, Smokey’s Muskellunge Shop and Rollie and Helen’s Musky Shop, Miller Beer of the North Woods. A reminder for all WMT 2006 anglers – the drawing for the Ranger boat is on Sunday, September 24th at Heckel’s Marina at the awards ceremony, which starts at 2:00pm. You must be present to win! The 2007 schedule will be available soon and will be posted on the WMT’s website (www.wmtseries.com). If you have any questions, please email the WMT at [email protected] or call (715) 369-1394.
