Posts: 1316 Location: Madison, WI | Can you catch a sucker in one body of water and fish with it in another?? I know you can use panfish as bait but it has to be on the same body of water they were caught in.

Posts: 382 | Think about it, the minnow men usually trap suckers from shallow lakes/wetlands/creeks and they don't tell you at the bait the store "you can only use the 8-10" suckers on yellow lake, and the only place you use the 11-12" suckers is deer lake etc. I would say Yes you can use them.

Posts: 1316 Location: Madison, WI | There's a couple creeks around here, that might hold some suckers. Any suggestions on bait/methods for catching them? Has anyone used bullheads, red horse, etc...

Posts: 203 Location: Germantown, WI | Scott, I've seen a bunch of suckers on the Milwaukee River in Ozaukee County. I've never tried to catch them there, but past experience in PA is that they are not that easy to catch. Of course I used to catch suckers accidentally while trout fishing, but never at the right time of year when I could use them for bait. Suckers are notoriously spooky. Spring is the time when people typically fish for them when they are making their spawning run. They are probable more susceptible to being caught by hook and line at that time. As far as using panfish for bait, I've seen Eric Hatajaa do that on Gillespie's Waters and Woods show. I know that people say that they must be from the same body of water, but my reading of the regs does not indicate this. It seems to me that the plain meaning of the regs is that any panfish used for bait must meet any length limits and bag limits for the body of water being fished, but there is nothing that says they have to be caught from the same body of water. I've never done this mind you, but there is a pond in back of our condo that has bluegills, perch and bullheads galore. I've thought about catching some and taking them to Okauchee to use a bait for pike or bass, but I've never done it. Tom Ramsey

Posts: 194 | I try to do this as much as possible. Scott, I usually use a worm on the bottm in the small streams around town. Sometimes it works, the rest of the time I end up buying my suckers. Did you get one of the 1/2 price bait cards at Dorn this past weekend? As for the bluegill question- It has always been my understanding of the rules for WI that a bluegill must come from the same water you use it for bait, count towards your daily bag-limit etc. just like any other sportfish/panfish specie. If you want to do this it shouldn't take long to get a couple gills on most any body of water, but I'd rather buy a sucker for bait first.

Posts: 194 | One thing I forgot- You cannot fish in a trout stream, even for suckers, if the trout season is closed. I believe that goes to the end of September. After that you can try for them in other streams or in other sections of a trout stream that isn't the trout stream section (Confused yet?), but make sure you know where you are in relation to the trout streams.
