To celebrate the coming of fall, MuskieFIRST is running a contest of a new sort: How would you shop for this rookie muskie angler? Read the fictitious scenario below, knowing that you'll be doing some serious shopping at Smokey's Muskellunge Shop http://www.smokeysmuskieshop.com/ for this new muskie angler.

***SCENARIO***

My name is Master Sergeant Dennis Franklin, and I'm totally new to muskie fishing, but also totally excited about jumping in with both feet. I've just returned from a tour of duty in Iraq and am leaving the service over the winter. When I was young, my father and grandfather used to take me and the family fishing for bass and panfish on our annual summer trips to the north woods of Wisconsin. Though we never fished for muskies, the thought of a big monster fish with a mouth full of teeth always intrigued me. Somehow over the years, as my grandfather passed and my father had less and less time for trips, we stopped fishing, and all the fishing gear was either thrown out, or was lost along the way.

While overseas, a guy in my unit brought back to me the pull to chase fish. He'd always be talking about when he got back he'd be fishing this lake, and that lake, ONLY looking for that ONE fish, that one muskie worthy of being called a trophy. He got transferred to a new unit, and I got shipped back home, but while messing around on the computer, I came across this site, MuskieFIRST. After reading your stories, and looking at all the monster fish pics, I know huge muskies are a goal I need to hit before I get a real job and get back into civilian life.

With a little bit of money saved from the last few years in the service, and armed with $1000 in gift certificates (coming home presents from the family) at Smokey's Muskellunge Shop in Pewaukee, WI, I'm ready to start gearing up. I'm planning on using my saved money for travel and on the water costs (deposits are down, personal monies saved for the trips/guide dates/boat rentals/lunch/travel/fishing licenses, etc.), but hoping to NOT have to spend any of my own money purchasing all the things I'm going to need to fish. I'm planning on taking a lot of guides out (Gregg Thomas in early spring down in KY, Mike Koepp on Pewaukee, Steve Worrall in Oneida county in summer, with Steve Herbeck on Eagle Lake in August, Steve Jonesi in September on Mille Lacs), but also fishing locally here by bumming rides and renting boats around my house in Delafield, WI. My two big trips I've got planned are a week at Andy Myers Lodge (going to need to rent a camp boat and fish with my wife solo, scary thought, eh?) and four days up in Presque Isle, WI. in October with the MuskieFIRST Fall Outing. Though I'll be fishing with guides, I would like to have the right stuff to be able to use my own stuff when fishing with them, or alone with my wife (who is kind of buying into trying to catch muskies, too). And like I said, I'm jumping into this whole heartedly!!!!

Again, I have $1000 to spend at Smokey's, and need your help outfitting myself! I have nothing but those gift certificates and a lot of desire!!!!!

***END OF SCENARIO***

With $1000, how would you outfit Dennis? You know where he's fishing, you know who he's fishing with. You know where he's shopping http://www.smokeysmuskieshop.com/ and you know how much he has to spend.

The contest will be who can best equip Dennis for his rookie year of muskie fishing? Each entry (submitted as a post on this thread) will be judged by our panel of judges (Mike Koepp, Joel Michel, Steve Worrall, Michael Winther, and myself), and we will each vote on who has best accomplished this task. Though there will be no one RIGHT answer, if you forget certain bits of gear that are needed or spend more than the allotted $1000, you will be bonked from consideration. Through careful checking, we have determined that everything that Dennis needs can be purchased at Smokey's, either through their website, or directly from the shop (hint hint, you might need to call them for a price check on at least one item).

Each entry will be need to be an itemized list (with description and dollar amount) of whatever you feel Dennis will need, and it can ONLY be bought through Smokey's, and CANNOT exceed $1000. We are limiting this at one entry per member, and you must be a registered member to enter this contest, but that entry can be edited as often as you wish, prior to the end of the contest. Think carefully on the scenario before you rush to shop....

This contest begins September 8th at 9:15AM CST, and the last entry must be in before October 1st at 12 midnight CST.
Judging will be done after October 1st, with the winner announced no later than October 15th!
*disclaimer: this is the first time we have run a contest like this, so please do not be looking for loop-holes, and please contact me directly via PM with questions.

PRIZES:
-Calcutta 400 (donated by Smokey's Muskellunge Shop)
-MuskieFIRST Hat
-MuskieFIRST Mug

Thanks again to Smokey's Muskellunge Shop http://www.smokeysmuskieshop.com/ and good luck to all our contestants!

What no Fox Chain? Gasp!

Serious question for you - for the contest purposes will we need to account for tax and S&H?

Good question guest! Thanks for bringing that up.

***this is an internet and/or phone order, so no taxes, and since its going to be such a big order Smokey's will throw in shipping and handling. Or, I suppose Dennis can order online, and pick it up in person. SO, no worries about S&H or taxes, just the cost of gear.****

So are we going to post our list here in the forums?

Yes, you need to. Not up for discussion. If others edit their posts to put in items they might have otherwise forgotten, so be it.

Thank you I will give them a call. I was kicking myself for not buying a loon chopper at one of the shows. But really I have a black one already and the fish really don't care. I think it just looks cool.

Only TWO entries so far....need I get into my own contest and show you how it's done? I think not, but I do think I see holes....holes in each of your shopping lists.

Do not fear, all who have been afraid to toss thyn hats into the ring....with but a few small changes, you could vault ahead of the two who have had the guts to be the first of many.

The "Release Kit" they are talking about is the UP MUSKY PRODUCTS "PRO" release kit featuring "KNIPEX" cutters, I believe John is retailing them for around $79.95 if "KNIPEX" are not needed ( I believe that they are) the "Basic" kit retails for around $39.95 each kit has all the needs for proper release, "BAKER" 8" mouth spreader, 8" long nose pliers, "FISKARS" scissors, and based on what kit either an economy grade compound mini bolt cutter or the "KNIPEX" mini bolt cutters, each tool is lanyarded into the "PLANO" box so it can't be dropped over the side of the boat will working on a fish in the net in the water, and if for some reason the whole kit ends up over the side of the boat (like that hasn't happened) it has a flotation value built into the "PLANO" Box. John has both models of the kits available, he had them at all of the WMT events...Randy
